After much tiredness of the modulation on my Guides I'm ready to swap them out ,in favour of some xt brakes as on my hardtail they are great But .. I'm off to the Alps in a few months and can't help wonder ifI will be lacking in braking power when it comes to longer Alp esq runs. .long and short am I better off just going for the Saints ?
Never had a problem with XTs in the Alps, run them on all the bikes, although I did pick up some Saints in the week from Ebay for £250 and then the 5% cashback from Topcash back which made them reasonable.
I did a season a few years ago in tignes. I was using SLX m675's on a downhill bike, I was riding maybe 6 hours a day, everyday for about 6 weeks and never suffered a problem with them, didn't even have to bleed them or change pads. If that's anything to go by angway
Hi
I have XT on a number of bikes and they’re fine on everything I’ve used them on. Admittedly not the alps but in Spain. I would be more than happy to use them in the Alps though.
I have Saints on two bike though and the power is phenomenal-it’s like riding into a wall!!
Saints tend to be more pricey though
Cheers
Steve
Steve after reading all the posts about people being happy with their xts I was sold until the hitting a wall quote ..I did giggle
Hi
Don’t get me wrong XTs are very good in my opinion but the Saints are sooooo powerful.
I had all XTs then when I was building a new bike I picked up a set of Saints for about £130 so thought I’d give them a go.
id go with 820s rather than 810s as I find the lever feel more consistent
cheers
Steve
Shimano Resin pads are rubbish for long decents, they fade badly, fit sintered
XTs on my Capra.
Perfect in the alps
I live in Austria and regularly ride gondola access trails. I have m8000s on my reign and have never had a problem with them, absolutely no problem in Finale eithier.
Never even thought about a different set when i built a hardtail up this winter.
Cheers all, Ive never had a problem with them in the lakes and as I already own 5 spare sets of race matrix pads here I've gone for a new set of Xts Inc 203S ice techs, think its the best bet,,
Get some Zees and stick sintered pads in. I've also changed the split pin to a proper bolt on mine.
Can I ask what the modulation problem was with your guides ?
I find shimano brakes incredibly non-modulated (pure on:off digital response) - are guides worse or do you mean that you wish they were more like shimano?
I'll prob be buying brakes and was expecting that I'd want "notshimano" for that reason
Older Shimano xt with (very) low cost Shimano 6hole discs and "no name" resin brake pads, vacation in the Alps: the brake surface on the discs - front and back - turn dark and the "braking sound" changes on very long downhill runs.
But this recovers after a couple days of trail riding again. Sometimes the discs warp a bit but even this goes away again.
Never had the brakes fail.
Im not a fan with the longer lever travel and lack of that on off feel people talk about , and even with the race matrix pads they just feel lackluster in comparison with the M8000s ,i feel like im constantly waiting for them to start working where as with the XTs I know that when i pull the lever that they will get to work right away
