I have a SL - M770 Shifter and wanted to know how I could tell which speed it supports, im after it to support 10speed set up.

I though it would be as simple as how mnay time it clicks but it only seems to do 8 - is this the right way to check?

I thought 770 was only 9 speed (8 clicks). You'd want 780.

Yes, the rear mech will matter. 8/9/10 speed read derailleurs have different pull ratios. So u need to get the right rear mech for the shifter.

Actually, 770 did come in 10-speed too, but if you're only getting 8 clicks then that answers the question anyway.

There was 770-10 (check the markings carefully) but generally 770 is 9sp and 780, 785 were 10sp.
