Bought some XTR pedals from a large online retailer about 18 months ago, and I'm trying to have them replaced under warranty (snapped axle) now.

They've said that M980s are discontinued, and that they're unwilling to provide M9000s as a replacement as they're ~£10 more the M980s at the time I purchased them. That seems a bit weird to me, I mean, they're the obvious replacement item.

I mean, they've offered me store-credit, so it's not altogether unreasonable - but I kinda expected that warranty would replace with the item that supercedes when the original is unavailable.

Kinda wondering if I could bypass and go directly to Shimano - thoughts?

Your statutory rights are with the retailer but the importer / manufacturer may provide greater warranty than this. At 18 months old its probably the manufacturers warranty you are relying on so it depends on the terms of that but usually it should be a replacement part and if not available the nearest equivalent.

I'd stop being so pedantic and just take the refund, which seems an entirely fair and reasonable offer. I believe they are also within their rights to deduct an amount from the refund for "fair use", so getting offered the full whack is a good result.

Your probably lucky that the offer wasn't just to replace the axles for you.

Shimano have no obligation to assist.

Also, given M980 pedals are available for c.£20 less than M9000's, and you are being offered the M9000 price less a tenner, it sounds like you could probably take the refund, buy some M980s and still have ten quid left in your pocket.

I'd be happy with replacing the axles.

Point being that they are covered by a three year warranty, so I didn't expect to pay on top of that for a replacement.

Refund, replace, or repair.

The merchants choice.

They are offering a refund.

That's the end of their obligation.

Judging by the tone of the replies you often get to this kind of thread I wonder whether some on here would be happier if we had no consumer rights at all 🙄

Having said that OP I would consider a refund after 18 months use a fair result. No harm in trying shimano direct if you like though. The worst that can say is no.

Does store credit count as a refund these days? I'd be wanting cold, hard cash.
