I have a Shimano SLX rear hub of the boost variety. Recently I had to replace the free hub which in turn meant a complete strip down, regrease and rebuild. Since I have done this the wheel tightens on the cone locking nut when fitted. There is a bit of drag when spun in my hands and you can feel it pulling on the axle.
I have tried tightening the cones but it still loosens causing movement.
Where have I gone wrong with the rebuild?
I'm sure it all got put back as it came out. I have used mobile marine grease on the bearings could that cause this issue?
Sounds like you need to back the cones off a touch and really nip up the locknuts tight to them. Ideally* on a qr hub you want a minute amount of play that will be taken up by the compression given by the QR.
It could be that the cones are pitted, I assume everything looked fine.
Did you keep each side's balls seperate? They can wear differently so be different sizes on each side, best to keep each side together if you aren't replacing them.
Grease type will make very little difference.
*Seriously though *just* dialling out the play will do.
edit - With it being boost I'd assume it's not QR so not sure it's even worth aiming for a bit of play.
