Last 4 sets of Shimano spd shoes have had the soles de-bond. 3 pairs AM45 and a pair of winter boots.

My riding is hard on shoes as it's mainly Lakes with lots of hike-a-bike so needs to be tough with good grippy sole.

What other shoes to look at? Are the latest Shimano offerings any better?

I'm a big fan of shimamo am range my storm trooper ones still going strong and the black replacements still as new. I got the new am9 as designed by the athertons etc.... so far not great first pair I destroyed on the first outing split the sole and the flap over piece ripped off. Second pair just don't feel right, would rather use my speshi tahoo.

Same problem for me and found lake shoes are much burlier especially the leather ones. Rocking some big boot things now for winter mx303's i think and some mx180's.

I like the look of these ones http://www.giro.com/eu_en/products/men/cycling-shoes/dirt/terradurotm-mid.html They look really robust and practical but then I saw that they are going to be about £150!!!!

Ive pre-ordered some of the Giros - the Privateers I have are quite lightweight disco slipper style, but great shoes, so I am hoping for similar performance (albeit a very different style) from the terraduro Mids. Unlikely to see them much before christmas though.

Lake MX145 are tough, grippy and waterproof, but not too warm. My favourite boots! THey make a colder weather version- mx303- but nowt butch for the hot summer weeks.
Mine have lasted 3 years of spring and autumn use on very abrasive sandstone and still look like new.

Lake are up there, perhaps even above, Sidi in terms of quality, but Giro are definitely second division.

I've got some of the shimano Xc61 shoes, the red grippy bits have de-bonded after 6 months use! Pretty annoyed, wondering it warranty would cover it

@duir compared to shimano I'd say go up one euro size, and they are quite skinny so if you're wise footed definitely consider the hv option

HV giros are the same width as the standard shoe. They just have more upper for chunky feet. Doesn't really help with wide feet. Lake do a wide fitting which is properly wide, for flippers.

I've been using the same pair of shimano am's ( not sure which ones but they're the black and white ones) for about six years now through all kinds of Welsh weather and after a good wash they could almost pass as new. Don't expect them to die for a very long time.

I've always previously had stiff as a board disco slippers but have just moved to Specialized Rimes and they're much more comfy and have a grippy but flexible Vibram sole.

I like the am45s... however they weigh a ton. Cam anyone recommend a robust shoe that doesn't feel like I've got a brick on each foot?

As above really- I have two older pairs of shimano shoes that just keep going. At least 5 years already. Before that I had one pair of Spesh SPD shoes for 12 years and I just got bored of them in the end, they didn't really fall apart. Amazing.

Anyone had any success in sticking shoes back together. If so what glue did you use. I have a pair of spesh that are coming apart at the toes. Rest of the shoe is fine, would like to get a few more years out of them.

My 2014 Specialized Comp shoes have both split at the toe protector/shoe joint, they are still wearable but this seems pretty poor as they've only got 7k or so on them. Is this what's happening to yours Fisherboy? I think they are probably repairable by patching them from the inside you can get shoe glue and patch kits on ebay but I was worried that they'd rub so I just bought some new MTB shoes and these are now reserved for commuting only.

No such problems with my Shimano boots that have taken the worst of four winters now.

I agree that Shimano quality has gone right down

Bought some Giro shoes about 18 months ago and been very impressed - like this but without the yellow markings. Comfy, great quality and look normal of the bike

I'm a UK size 12 / 13 and they fit very well

Very likely to buy some of their winter boots soon

Yep Shimano shoe quality has gone down. I've a pair of XC61s that have now lasted only a year before splitting in the upper. Mental.

Not quite sure what to replace them with - as I still love Shimano shoes - it's the fit, but all this BOA bollux I can't be doing with. Plus, they've totally stopped doing shoes in white now, and MTB shoes MUST be white.

i've still got a pair of shimano dx flat shoes...theyre over 10 years old and have taken an absolute hammering but still look new when clean...currently using the adidas terrex trail cross sl...i cant see them lasting as long as the shimanos...as nice as they are...but when they die I'll go back to my trusty dx's
