So, further to my complaining about clothing size ... now I was looking at Shimano shoes online. According to a notice on Tweekes site, Shimano shoes run a size small compared to normal shoe sizes. Is that so? What insanity is this? Are the shoes made for roadie whippets as well? I despair !!

I actually think it's about half a uk size smaller. This strangely works out for me as I seem to be about a 9.5 UK sizing which in Shimano sizing is a 44. I've three pairs of different Shimano shoes and would buy more from Shimano when they wear out.

I am normally 9.5-10 in proper shoe sizes and find shimano size 45 a perfect fit.

This now has me looking at a pair of Shimano carbon disco slippers that I don't really need. Mmmm RX8 almost look like good value at £115 when compared to the S-Phyre ones (which are apparently heavier than the RX8 ones).

I'm a UK 10 in shoes, trainers that can be a 44 1/3 to a 45 depending on if they're Salomon or Adidas Terrex GTX.

Northwave MTB and road shoes I'm a 45, Shimano I'm a 46.

Your nest bet is to ignore the UK and EU sizes and match the Japanese / cm size as these are consistent across everything from what I've found.

Shimano mtb shoes (old AM41s) = 46
Shimano road shoes (rp3) = 47

Normal shoes/trainers = 10 - 10.5 or 11s

Go figure. Shoes aren't designed for my feet🤔😂

It's not just Shimano, I'm a size EU 45 in multiple shoes; new balance, Northwave... Endura I need a size 46.

If you have narrow, long feet, they might be true to size. But otherwise, another vote for "one euro size up" (or half a UK size up).

Depending on shoe I'm a 9.5 or 10...my Shimano shoes are 44 - they fit length-wise but they are slightly wider than I'd like...however they are about 3 years old so clearly not been a real issue.

I've got fat Hobbit feet, UK 11.5 and wide too

My Mtb shoes are Shimano wide size 47 but they still feel narrow to me. 48s are like barges

Uk8/42 in Shimano, northface, adidas, meindle, hitec, specialized. Shimano are my default shoe brand and have been for 20yrs. They work for me. The exception is the winter boots, which I go up a size to 43, this has always been recognised

What a strange situation, where a size can be open to interpretation.

The vagueness if small/medium/large is bad enough, but when there is such a wide range of sizes involved in, say, the EU scale, you'd think that any given size would be consistent (width fittings not withstanding)

If your buying online just order 2 or 3 sizes to try on at home and return the others.

Sure but….
1. Buying a few extra pairs of shoes leaves me hundreds of quid out of pocket waiting for refunds, and
2. The state of retailers stocks just now nobody has all the sizes I would need 🙁

But yes, in the end it’s the only solution.

Spare a thought for us folk with tall feet. Not long for my height at 6’, nor particularly wide (though not slim) - but very tall in the instep, with flat arches.

Depending on brand and cut, I’m anything from 8 to 10.5.
And some brands just don’t fit full stop.

My wife has always had to size up 1 as her Shimano MTB shoes have always been too narrow.

If they're driving your nuts you may not be putting them on right

42 or 43 in most shoes, 43 or 44 in cycling shoes. I've got Shiman MTB shoes M089 and boots MW7's in 44 and road boots RW5's in 43 (tok a chane on them and they fit.

Exactly the same for me but with Shimano flat pedal shoes.

I find them fairly true to size. Size 10 on every pair of shoes in the last thirty years and have 44 and 45 shimano footwear both of which are fine.

If it helps I have skinny feet if that’s a thing, long toes (sounds weird but trying to be helpful).

Well, I've just ordered size 46. I'd normally expect to take 45, so we'll see how they work out!
