Are they different? If so, what's the best way of running MTB gearing with drops? SRAM CX1?

They are different. Sram cx is one way, a Lindarets tanpan would let you use shimano mtb with Road shifters

Ah. Can't help you on front dshifting. There was a tanpan thread somewhere- mine were a but fiddlier to set up than usual but seem to be working
