I've got a XTR M9000 wheelset. On other bikes I've got XT M8000 hubs. Despite rumours to the contrary, I know what I'm doing maintenance wise and am pretty good at cup and cone hubs.

For whatever reason, my XTR rear hub loosens off regularly. The cups looks fine, there's the correct number of bearings in the drive side and the drive side locknut is factory fitted and otherwise untouched. The hub is loosening off to the point where one of the loose ball bearings in the freehub is able to ride over the others, which obviously leads to some pretty serious noises. The non-drive side cone and locknut are really tightened against each other hard. There's no play in the axle when first installed.

A bit of brief research suggests that XT hubs of this era did the same thing but none of the threads I can find are recent or have a conclusion on how they solved the problem. Anyone got any ideas?

If its an aluminium axle have the threads become worn?

Given it's the drive side, is there some "interference" with the dropout/cassette lock ring?

I'll take it apart and post some photos on here later TJ.

Scotroutes - I'll check. You mean you think the dropout is fouling the lockring and causing things to untighten as they catch?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I know it's a long shot.

Factory fitted doesn't always mean that it's sufficiently tight - I'd check the DS cone/locknut again to ensure the cone preload isn't backing off in use. Was common on 780 series XT hubs - different assemble I appreciate, but still worth ruling out.
