I’ve found a nearly new Shimano RD M772 9 speed rear mech in a box in my garage, but I can’t tell which model it is and hence what capacity it has.

Looking online the Shimano leaflets only refer to a GS “long cage” and a SGS “super long cage”.

But Ive seen shops refer to a medium cage.

The length between jockey wheel axis is approx 78mm, so I think it’s a GS as I believe the SGS measures more like 100mm.

But could it be a “medium” if such a mech exists?

Thanks

GS is whats often known as medium cage.

SS > Short
GS > Medium
SGS > Long

You can tell by the shape of the cut out in the mech cage. First is SGS and second is GS

Thanks for replies.

So I have a GS which is a Long Cage according to Shimano documents.

There is no “medium” or “Short” cage is this model.

Sorry I should have been clear. The 'S' in SGS stands for super, so in Shimano terms there's long and super long. However in MTB casual parlance it was usually known as medium & long, and then when Saint etc. came along that was short.
