I've go a pair of Shimano / Pro grips that I want to put on my Renthal carbon bars. However I can't seem to get them fully on, they still have about 3/4 inch to go. I think this is because the grips seem to have an internal expanding bung and the ends of the bars are around 2mm thick and the bung is not going inside the bar.

Is there a trick to getting these grips onto thick / carbon bars or are they just incompatible? I've tried undoing the bolt in the end until it's really loose, but it still doesn't seem to go in. I can't see any maximum wall thickness / or that they are unsuitable for carbon bars on the manufacturer website or a couple of sites I've just looked at that sell them.

Thanks in advance!

OK, for anyone following in my footsteps, it can be done. I took them apart to see what was going on. The nut needs holding while you take the end bolt right out - either with a small socket on a long extension or by jamming it with screwdriver etc.

The nut is welded to an oval plate that is held in the rubber bung by a small lip. With a bit of washing up liquid and rolling it between my fingers, I got the bung in the end of the bars. then put the grips over the top and put the bolt in the end gingerly to avoid knocking the bolt / plate out the rubber part.

I think the 2mm wall thickness if the Renthals is probably the thickest bars that they'd fit.
