Best way of getting this to work (1*9 so no FD) ?
Low gears more important than high, if that makes a difference. My reading is the pull is different. Can't see a JTek product which helps. Or have I got it wrong?
My understanding is that this won't work, but you can run a 10spd Shimano RD and 9spd SRAM shifter with a 9spd Shimano cassette (with a little jiggery-pokery)
However, if you're buying (or acquiring) a Shimano 10spd shifter and RD, then why not also buy a 10spd cassette? You can pick up an SLX one for about £20 and it'll fit onto the same freewheel as a 9spd cassette.
As said a 10s SLX HG81 11-36 will fit, work properly, is lighter and cheaper and has a lower bottom gear than 9speed.
Thanks, very helpful. I'll go 10 speed.
My reading is the pull is different.
Correct.
If you already have a 10speed shadow mech it's probably easier and cheaper to find a cheap 10 speed cassette and a (dynasis) shifter.
If you already have a 9 speed shifter and specifically want a 9 speed Shimano, shadow mech to go 1x9 I reckon the Current Alivio M4000 looks pretty good in terms of value, it lacks a clutch but I've seen reports of people happily using one for cheap 1x9 setups with 11-40 cassettes (note: stated capacity is 11-36).
Otherwise you're into using a SRAM 9 speed "Exact actuation" shifter with a 10 speed Shimano MTB "Dynasis" mech, which is a known workaround from a few years back when shimano first put our their 10 speed MTB kit but it's probably not going to save you much money or faff...
At the end of the day Current generation Deore 10 speed (M6000) accomodates an 11-42t cassettte (and *might* be able to go further?), has a clutch (if that's a feature you want) and is pretty competitively priced. for a cheap 1xN drivetrain it's hard to overlook Deore, except of course for NX...
