Really? They look like a normal pedal with a superfluous bit around the outside to me.

I suspect how they look is less important than how they work.
They work well for me. Easy to clip into, and can wear normal feet with 'em too.
My trusty XTR pedals broke after about 5 years of abuse so I thought I'd give a platformed SPD a try.
They really feel much better under foot than the XTR pedals. You are still clipped to the bike but you can now feel a big fat platform under your foot when you are riding. Makes them much more comfortable throught the rough stuff and gives you more to lean on in the corners.
The engagement isn't quite as nice as the XTR pedals and they are obviously a good chunk heavier but overall very impressed with them and how they feel underfoot.
