I've managed to break my shimano Lh trigger shifter and have spent the afternoon looking for replacements. I don't really want to buy pair right now, so does anyone know where I can get the Lh only. I've tried the Madison import site but nothing suitable there. Anybody got ideas?

Try your LBS, we've often got them kicking around. Depending on what type you want, they can be ordered from Madison (you have to look in the correct section to find them).
Edit XT 9/10sp, SLX 9sp, or Altus available from Madison.

There are always folk looking for right hand shifters so buy a pair and sell the right shifter?

Irc, should've said that its 8-speed I've got atm. They do look the same as the broken one. Could they work?

Shimano LH MTB shifters are all the same cable pull etc up to 9 speed anyway. That Deore shifter will work with 8 speed.
