Does anyone have a definitive guide for Shimano hydraulic brakes for which calliper & lever combinations work and which don’t?
Oh, and are there any problems with the hoses?
Thanks
Wiksey
You 'should' be fine mixing and matching components. The only compatibility issue I can see would be whether its a banjo or direct hose mount.I've set up some really old 4pot xt calipers with the last generation radial levers and some old dual control levers with new caliper with no issues.
So I should be OK mixing & matching LX (M585), SLX (M665) & XT (M775)?
I'm trying to cobble a hydraulic brake set together out of my parts bin but only want to carry one type of spare pads when out on the hills.
You can up-spec calipers but not levers, at least you certainly could with "previous" versions. but I'm not sure you can run a servo wave lever with a caliper that's not from a servo-wave brake or vice-versa.
I'm not actually sure if any of that helps.
The new xtr 980's both use the same caliper but a trail lever with servo wave and a race lever without. So I'd assume it does'nt make any difference to the compatibility..
If you're not having to buy owt then give it a bash.....time wasted playing with bike bits is not time wasted at all.
They're all cross compatible.... probably...

Been using XT servo-wave levers with 2004 XT non-servowave calipers for a while and no problems so far for me.
Pretty much anything goes here too - SLX servo levers with older deore calipers not a problem (hone/lx/slx & some deore all use same calipers as far as I can see anyway).
Dont know about the latest kit Mx80 type stuff, but pretty much everything else works together ok.
Hmmm, ok. Thanks for your help.
Looks like I'll be shopping for the bits to make my spares bin parts into useful brakes again.
