I'm trying to upgrade the groupset in my gravel bike as economically as possible. Currently have SRAM Apex 11spd, which isn't great, then combined with bad internal routing, makes shifting more luck than anything else.

Does anyone know if you can get away with using just the right hand shifter on the new GRX Wireless group to shift the rear mech both directions?

SRAM require you to have both shifters, one for up, one for down.

Thanks.

Yes you can, right shifter controls rear mech, left  controls either  the front mech or you can get one that acts as a dropper lever

Wireless grx is 12 spd and not cheap but you can mix it with wireless shimano mtb rear mechs

You end up with 6 buttons essentially and can program them to do what you want. I use the left hand shifter for flicking through the garmin and the right hand lever for changing up and down. You then have two bonus buttons on the inside of the lever.

I am selling my GRX 2x wireless equipped bike in the next couple of weeks. Waiting on delivery of a SRAM 13speed XPLR equipped bike. Im going to put a couple of satellite shifters on the bike when it comes to add some extra functionality.

Do you mean can you just buy a right hand di2 shifter and keep your existing left hand mechanical one? Yes you can - I did this for a bit but I think they are slightly different shapes, which isn't optimal. I also found the buttons a bit small to shift on one unit, but this could just be a skill issue on my part - it was my cx race bike and I found I was mis-clicking at inopportune times. So I prefer the sram style shifting split between the two units, but it's personal choice.

I'd been waiting for the fully wireless 1x GRX but now it's here I'm underwelmed and the new 13x AXS has reportedly got a much better lever shape which was one of the GRXs trump cards. GRX 2x still makes sense for some riders but the 1x12 GRX is 10-51 which leaves big gaps for the mainly flat riding I do. The 10-46 and 13sp of the XPLR cassette is much more suited.

If you are set on GRX then you may be able to pick up the older 11sp DI2 at a discount or secondhand. Not wireless but the wires once done won't be effected by bad cable routing.

Slight hijack.

@robbo1234biking how do you get the grx shifter to talk to your Garmin?

Secondly, can you configure any button to do any action? IE could you mimic the SRAM way and shift up with one leaver and down with the other?

hopefully this helps. You can set it all up in e tube. Essentially for the garmin control you want to use the d fly channels.

Thanks. I'm not ready to go digital yet but reading that I think it might make sense to get 2x levers despite being only 1x
