Hi,
I've got a LX M585 rear wheel (26" with Mavic XC717 rim) that I've built into a bike for the Mrs.
There is quite a bit of play in the freehub (cassette wobble, lockring up tight). I've just taken it off and whilst the freehub seems in generally good condition and smooth, you can detect play in it and it makes a knocking noise when riding.
Now I'm feeling tight, the freehub that is specced by Shimano will cost me the best part of £40 delivered.
Sheldon Brown says that they are interchangable between models, but what other models?
The Shimano specced part is Y3C098010, but you can get a Y3SW98050 for a M595 rear hub on ebay for £19.
Any chance it will fit, or should I stop being tight, buy the new one and ignore the fact its for my mrs and worth more than the whole wheel.
Have you considered changing the bearings in it if the freehub itself isn’t damaged?
Have a look on Shimano's techdocs, they often list an interchangeable option on their EV section. Changing for a different type can create a few problems, sometimes outer seal housings are different sizes (can be swapped, but often results in distortion and a slack fit in the body), and I had a real pain with one old LX freehub having different bearing spacing to other freehubs (same outside dimensions though), and having to rebuild it multiple times with different spacers to get it right. If the correct model's available, i'd just get it (normally I try to get a complete hub, usually a few quid more, but comes with new bearings and cones).

lol, That is a cruel suggestion, assuming you've ever taken apart a shimano freehub and replaced the gazillionty tiny balls?

Maybe if the handling of tiny balls in order to reduce wobble is an issue you could ask someone with prior experience 😉
