I'm looking to replace my ancient Nukeproof Neutron flat pedals and quite like the idea of the Shimano offerings XTM8040 or the GR500 (I rode DXs in the dim and distant past and liked them).

Ideally though I want to stay low profile and don't want anything much thicker than my Neutrons (17mm I think) but I can't seem to find the platform thickness for either of these (even in Shimano's tech. docs).

I was wondering whether anyone knew the platform thickness.

looks like it has the measurements

16.4 mm for the Saints, 18 mm for the XTs

Old Saints are about 18.5mm; not sure how they got the spindle that much thinner on the new ones :/.

The body is cut away near the crank around the axle to make the platform thinner.

That's handy, thank you. I think that the GR500s are the same Saint body with a few downgrades for cost cutting and look lovely in silver, but CRC have silly discounts on the XTs at the moment making them cheaper than the GR500s.

worth considering that the old mx80 saints had an atrocious reliability record - they'd go loose and wobbly after a few months of riding, and be buggered within a year. £50 might be worth a gamble but I wouldn't spend anything like full price on them

They are serviceable axle assemblies with adjustable bearing preload. If you don’t adjust out play they will become damaged over time, but there’s little excuse for not doing it - it’s very simple. Worst case scenario if you do destroy the surfaces, you can buy spare axle assemblies. Same as any Shimano pedals.

The cup and cone system is adjustable, any play can be removed if caught in time.

l.e. as above
