I noticed some play in my pedals, I've had a quick google and it looks like you can buy replacement axle "cartridges" but they are quite pricey.
Are they user serviceable without too much trouble and special tools?

Yeah - the axle assembly comes out and the cup and cone bearing can then be tweaked up. Then fill the pedal body with grease before screwing the axle back in and this purges old grease and fills with new.
