Having just made an eBay purchase for some R517 disc calipers, I went to check out getting some pads for them, in anticipation of the fitted pads being worn/glazed/contaminated etc etc.  I had assumed that as the majority of shimano pattern pads are the same (M475, M525, R317), that these would also fit into that group. and the pads would be the same as my M475 & M495 calipers.

It seems I may be wrong.

So, can anyone point me to somewhere that can confirm whether the R517 pads are/aren't interchangeable with the M475 type pads?

Cheers,

Keith

Have you tried the Shimano website?

No but it's just put me off with an opening questions of "what do you ride: road/off-road".  Given one set of calipers are road, and one MTB, and I'm looking potentially for pads that fit both, I really can't be bothered spending large amounts of time comparing and contrasting mostly superfluous techdocs...

Looking at the superstar website/pad identifiers, I think they may be different by they don't list any shimano road calipers

You have road calipers. Click on "Road". Select the R517 calipers. It will then tell you which pads you need. Pretty simple really.

Yeah but it leads me to a specific pad type, for a specific brake/riding style/use needs.  I want to see what range of pads are available for each brake type, and whether there's any overlap.

And I don't want to buy shimano branded pads anyway.  So telling me I need "G04S" pads, means nothing if ordering from a third party...

Take the bike to a bike shop and ask them to fix it if you can't be bothered using Google to find information.

Lets be honest, we're not going to want to do that for you and you could have done it in less time than it takes to write a reply.

Open up the tec docs for the R517 and M475, compare the part numbers for the pads, done, there's usually a little asterix denoting other part numbers which are compatible but the wrong colour too.

They are a different shape so not interchangeable.

BR-R517 is specced with "Y8KA98010" G01S pads, which are the "newer" longer pads. Same pad shape as G02S, M666, M8000 etc in terms of fitment. You need non finned ones to fit the mechanical caliper. The new Shimano hydraulic road disc pads are different again, K02 shape.

G01S are resin, worth checking if your rotors are for resin pads only before you get sintered pads.

Old pads (M525 etc)

New pads (M8000 etc)

Thank you!

And Darn, I was hoping to have a full set of interchangeable pads across bikes.  Nevermind.  At least the newer pads appear to have a decent contact patch (might be as much as double my BB5 pads).

I'll be using Avid rotors so it'll be what it'll be on that. I think I'd rather have a more powerful, if faster wearing organic pad anyway...

And I was wondering about the finned ones. Not really needed on a mechanical set up anyway though, I guess.

Cheers, Much appreciated!
