Hello all,
I believe that both of the disc brake calipers on my Tripster need replacing. The brakes apparently self-contaminate overnight, after thorough washing and pad preparation.
The levers/shifters are Shimano RS505. Is there any known compatibility issue with using the cheaper Shimano calipers on these levers, rather than the direct replacements? e.g. https://bit.ly/2Xw7r6o (I am aware that the pad is a different type and apparently smaller)
or even mtb calipers e.g. https://bit.ly/38xz4C6? The originals seem dear.
As this is Shimano and I've been mixing and matching mtb levers/calipers for years with satisfactory performance, I currently assume that any 2 piston combo will work.
RS505's were the non-series 105 level levers I think? Usually come with RS505 calipers attached (which are flat mount), though I can recall seeing them available with RS785 calipers which are post mount, and are a non-series Ultegra level road version of the M785 XT caliper. So probably, yes, assuming your frame and fork are post mount. The hose routing may differ - historically, Shimano MTB calipers have brought the hose to the outboard caliper half, whereas the road calipers generally take the hose to the inboard caliper half. Note also that there may be some hose compatibility issues if switching from a compression fitting to a banjo fitting
hopkinsgm, you're spot on; I've RS505 levers & RS785 calipers.
The calipers are straight-in hoses and them + my frame post mount.
Thanks for the detail on the hose routing switching sides. I'd forgot to account for the banjo/straight in fitting issue though, so cheers for the reminder.
