I've been looking at Di2 as the costs seem to be dropping, but what do people think, too new or too fragile still??
it seems a neat way system, and should be more resistant to the usual mud and grit that collects in bowden cables etc, but if it breaks when bashed then it'll be more trouble than it's worth??
CX boys been using the road version for years,
how often have you ever smashed a mech?
I think at Ultegra level it makes a lot of sense. Dura Ace 9000 is, however, just so good it makes Di2 moot in my opinion.
I've smashed one in the last 5 years, but my bike has a derailleur guard that now looks VERY dog eared after 4 years of summer alps bashing!
one side effect of 1by is that i wonder if we spend more time with the rear mech tucked up close to the wheel, as we spend more time in the larger diameter cogs, compared to 2by/3by where you could get a "low" gear by dropping to the granny ring at the front. Hence, maybe we don't bash mechs as much as we did? Added to the shorter cage, and wider tyres, all these help shield the mech more??
Are we talking road or mtb?
MTB
although to be fair, it probably makes more sense on a swelt little road bike than a roughty toughty MTB......
I think it makes more sense off road actually. CX world champion won on Di2. When you absolutely want to shift, regardless of mud, Di2 will do it. On road I think he performance gains are moot. It is certainly mature enough. It will eventually be cheap enough!
