Is there any reason why I should not use a KMC chain with Shimano XT/XTR 10sp drivetrain?
I know Shimano say that their chains must be used; but I always fine them a pain with no quick link and having to snap off the new pin with pliers.

No, you don't have to use a Shimano chain. In fact new Giants with Shimano 10sp drivetrains ship with KMC chains these days.

But, you know you can use a KMC quick link with a Shimano chain - don't have to muck about with those stupid joining pins...

Thought as much. I have tried a KMC link but find that it is just too narrow to join. Perhaps I've got a duff one.

old_mtber - I nearly made this error with a shimano chain. Broke the chain in the right place to use the shimano pin, which of course is the wrong place to break it if using a quick link. Basically I was being a twit. Just checking you aren't trying to do the same thing with your KMC link.

I've always run quicklinks on my Shimano chains. Used the SRAM ones on my 9 speed chains, and KMC on my 10 speed ones.

I've not had a problem getting the 10 speed ones on, but have found them a little tighter to get off than the 9sp ones, so I've invested in a pair the special pliers.

I'm pretty sure I read that KMC make Shimano chains.

I like the gold KMC chains. Also been impressed with Connex.

Come to think of it, I have seen new bikes with Shimano chains but KMC quick links in the showroom.

I have alway run kmc x10 with my shimano 10 speed setup as found them to work much better than the shimano standard.

Thanks everyone. Now sorted the KMC link. It seems the 10 sp version is a very fine fit so the way to complete the join is to put the link on the top chain run and then apply pressure on the crank arm. KMC is the way to go with 10 sp I think as I've used them for years with9 sp and no issues.
Already have a set of link pliers so they'll be getting more use! 😀

After trying everything over the years I've found KMC to be the best all rounders, haven't had any issues with them at all. As mentioned, KMC is the factory's brand and they make a lot of big name brands, Shimano, Sram and Campag (if I remember right).

I'd definitely use the quick link over the Shimano snap off pins.
