so a few weeks ago my front zee started to misbehave...pistons not fully retacting on one side of the caliper leading to uneven pad wear. i contacted CRC and they told me to send it in.
then the rear slx started to play up...lever pulling all the way to the bar
so i sent them both in explaining what was wrong
fst forward 3 weeks and a brand new set of brakes were delivered to me yestarday as a warranty replacement
now here's the bit that i didnt get...CRC told me that the new brakes are covered by my remaining warranty from the original brake...which means that i have only 2 months left of warranty
is this correct given that they have given me a pair of brand new brakes...would they not be covered by a fresh 2 year warranty?
CRC dont seem to think so and they did state that should i have any further problems beyond the warranty expiry date then they would still have a look at them but my guess is that if they did become faulty then i would have to pray that they would again be replaced as a gesture of goodwill on CRc's part.
but does the timeline play a part in this...if say for example in 6 months time the brakes stop operating or if in 15 months time...would they still be willing to have a look at them and replace them?
i love my shimano brakes but i'd much rather have that peace of mind that they are covered by a suitable warranty.
my alternative is to sell them and just buy a new pair of brakes...but has anyone else had this where they were given a replacement brakes which have now lapsed the original warranty period and they too have needed warranty work?
The warranty period is based on purchase date. As that's when the contract starts.
Unless there are "special circumstances" like a recall. You may (but not guaranteed) get an extension to your warranty period in that case.
You might also get work warrantied if they need to repair/rebuild etc. (again, not guaranteed, but sometimes)
You might have extra rights under sale of goods (or whatever they call it now).
Two years warranty on brakes is good IMO, so I think it's reasonable.
Maybe sell the new brakes while unused and buy another set for a few quid more from Merlin or CRC, which you could regard as the cost of a new warranty.
As above, warranty is based on the original purchase date, not the potential replacement date.
The warranty period is based on purchase date. As that's when the contract starts.
thats a fair point and i accept thats the case...but my concern is that the new brakes ive been given could go pop in a few months time...if i then send them back CRC might do the right thing and replace them as a good will gesture given how new they are
but if they go pop in say 1 years time they may turn around and say "sorry we cant replace them"
looks like these will be going on sale soon
That's just the way warranties work, Shimano, CRC or anyone - always from the date of original purchase.
Future failures outside of warranty are for you to sort out - unless there is good will. No one but CRC themselves will know whether in your potential specific case at some arbitrary point in the future out-of-warranty period whether they will good-will a failure.
If you want a continuous 'safety net' or 'peace of mind' you need to keep buying new brakes when the warranty expires. I can pretty much guarantee that's not very cost effective though.
Anyway, CRC are correct in what they're telling you.
