My Saint brake pad disintegrated at the start of the day's riding, so I put spare pads in, which pushed the lever out too far and grabbed the wheel.
So I squeezed the lever a bit, and some fluid shot out of the outer end of the lever.
The lever was in the right place now, brake worked fine , so I carried on riding
Are the brakes designed to work like this?
Was it just extra fluid pushing past a seal?

But mostly, are they going to blow out oil when I hit the brake hard?

Sounds like you’ve bled the brakes with part used pads in the past.  Really, the lever throw adjuster is for setting lever position and if the pads were nipping the rotors the system was overfilled and you should have opened the bleed nipple to let a little fluid out.

My gut feeling is that you just blew a master cylinder seal, I wouldn’t ride them until that’s confirmed one way or the other.

Like I said, I have been riding it and it was working fine, though I didnt have to do any real hard braking
i would have let some fluid out, but this happened first.
So maybe it's alright now, but why don't brakes throw fluid out when pulled hard, like this just happened?

edit. There’s a previous thread on this three years ago.  EpicBleedsolutions thought maybe there is a pressure relief on current Shimano that would do as you say, but I’d still keep a very close eye on them for a bit.

thanks for the link
The leak was from the 'end of the barrel',there is a washer type thing et the end on saint and XT, which is not there on slx/deore
