Do shimano calipers require shimano brake adaptors to fit bigger discs? I have just fitted some old style slx brakes to my bike. I left the old superstar adaptors on there which worked fine on the back with 180mm discs. However, the caliper will not sit far enough in now to allow full contact with the pads across the full width of the disc.

Not quite sure what you have done or mean in terms of what you have done but I have used shimano and other third party adapters with equal success. Just need to ensure they are the right ones.

I have had to shim the adapter inboard on a marzocchi fork before to get it adjusted right. This was for one particular wheel/caliper combo.

I found the same thing with slx calipers and superstar adapters, and that was with superstar rotors . Bought a set of shimano adapters and the problem went away and all the pad was in contact with the rotor.

One of my bikes has Avid brakes, the other Shimano. Both are 160 mm rotors, IS rear frame mount, and post mount calipers. So an IS to PM adapter is needed. When I held the Shimano adapter next to the Avid one, they were significantly different, so not interchangeable. 😕

two other things to check- is the adaptor the right way around, and are you trying to run a rear IS adaptor on the front(it'll space it out by an extra 10mm)?

Everything is fitted correctly.all I've done is swapped brakes between my two bikes. As the fitment is the dame I simply removed the calipers and left the mounts on the bike. The fronts were no issue but the rears had the above problem. When I compared the two mounts the superstar did deem to sit the front higher than the other.

Theoretically they should all be pretty standard but its not like that in practice. Usually mix and match can be made to work with a couple of washers, though.

There are no washers on and it still sat to far from the disc, do no adjustments left. No real problem as its ok now, but just couldn't understand it.
