I need to swap some brake hoses on my shimano brakes. Ie take one hose off one brake and put onto another.
They're both shimano xt brakes hit of different years.
Is it as simple as unclamp- reclamp - bleed or will I need new olives and other such things to get a good seal?
If I do need new olives. Where is cheapest for those and /or replacement hose?
Simple question, hopefully simple answer?
not sure if cheapest but around couple quid on CRC. shop around if you want though
What models of XT brakes are you swapping from / to?
I recently bought some Clarks hoses for a pair of M525s (not the cheapest, but available in really obnoxious colours). I thought I could recycle the connection bits but it looks like even if you cut the barb out of the end of the old hose it and the olive may have lost their shape slightly. So I'm putting off starting the job because, although I'm sure they'd be fine, it's brakes and they help prevent dying.
You should always replace olives as a rule, they crush to seal... In practice, I've reused them a couple of times and not died but it's the sort of thing I might bodge on my own bike but I'd never do it to anyone else's, if you know what I mean...
I can't remember exactly what the Shimano ones are like, extracting the barb from the hose is hard/borderline impossible (by design) but what you can do with some is remove any rubber components, cut off the end of the hose with the barb in, then set the hose on fire. Once it melts, just scrape/wipe it off. Though this is a fair amount of toxic faff to save a couple of quid!

i've done this loads of times without needing new barbs/olives.
(sometimes, you can get by without needing to bleed the brakes too)
it can be difficult to judge how tight the 'collar' needs to be, i'm a coward so tighten them 'firm', and then another 1/4 turn if there's any obvious 'seeping' after a ride.
