Hi,

I recently purchased a second hand Vitus Nucleus VRX which has MT-400 brakes. The levers are very loose and need replacing.

Having a quick look I found these -

https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-mt400-mountain-bike-disc-brake/rp-prod207941?gs=1&sku=sku855904&utm_source=google&utm_term=&utm_campaign=&utm_medium=base&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_c-OBhDFARIsAIFg3ezkCuZ7LjXKPxep9z8G6y7vV9c4svKebpFmLH-Lk64JoL0xRrqbL0saAvDbEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

But I have to admit I don't know what the different options are - Option: 750mm LH, 2000mm RH, 1350mm RH, 1700mm RH, 1600mm RH, 1300mm RH, 1400mm RH, 1450mm RH.

OK I get the RH, LH bit but is the number the cable length?

The bike is going to be used for "gravel" style riding I'm thinking a straight like for like replacement is enough......or should I be looking for any other options? I didn't spend a lot on the bike (its for my son) so want to keep the cost down.

As ever thanks for any help.

The number is indeed the length of the hose. Ideally you can get one close enough to just right to be able to just install it, but they're not too difficult to shorten if needs be. Making them longer is more costly and involved so opt for more length rather than less if you're unsure!

Thanks.

I'm having a look and my understanding is the lever is the MT401 and I found these -

https://winstanleysbikes.co.uk/shimano-bl-mt401-complete-brake-lever?gclid=Cj0KCQiA_c-OBhDFARIsAIFg3eyb3E8rw4B-djuG3OTeWxk75soEM-qNNTroDDkU9h7cptjbSHapvJMaAjgAEALw_wcB#shimano-bl-mt401-complete-brake-lever-right-hand

So I'm thinking I could buy those and just replace the levers.

Now...I'm saying all that without the knowledge on how to do it so it will be a learning exercise!

They are pretty easy to swap. You'll need to do a bleed after but that's a skill you'll want to have anyway. Shimano brakes are pretty cross compatible so if you want to put better levers on you can, but those linked above will be fine

The only issue with swapping the levers at the moment is an almost complete drought of the official Shimano fluid. If you're happy to use alternatives (and many of us have with no problems),go for it. Personally, i'd be happier with those than any of the higher end Shimano brakes that I regularly have to use.

When you say loose, what do you mean? Rattling and loose at the pivot, a lot of movement before you feel pressure or very little pressure and the lever coming back to the bars?

Thanks for the replies.

With regards to being "loose" it's the actual lever - so the bit you pull just "flapping around" for want of a better description. So I think that's your loose at the pivot.

When I pull the lever the breaks do engage ok.

The levers are very loose and need replacing.

What do you mean "loose"? Are they physically damaged or do they just need bleeding and adjusting?
