have been looking on Madison today at Shimano 1x XT chainrings. it lists both CRM80 and CRM81 in my size, 30t. what's the difference between the two?

Tooth profile.
The 81 is narrow/wide. The 80 has a square profile.

The 80 has been discontinued and replaced by the 81 after a re-think in design. Supposedly the 81 is better for chain retention.
