Apologies if its been covered before, but I couldn't find it in a search.
The first generation of the Shimano XTR 12 speed shifters were 11 AND 12 speed compatible (Shimano has since removed this switch from the later shifters), did this switch simply lock out the last 'click' or did it also change the pull ratio somehow within ?
My thinking is... if I bought a new 12 speed XTR (or XT, SLX I guess ?) shifter, but set the RD limits on a 11 speed cassette so the shifter wasn't able to access its last click, would the gear changes work correctly for the 11 gears accessible on the shifter ?
I know Shimano have a habit of changing cable pull ratios between each new generation of Shifters/Rear Derailleurs, its purely the early shifters that were both 11 and 12 speed compatible that got me thinking the spacing and cable pull is the same between 11 and 12 speed ?
Anyone tried this ?
There are various small companies out there that sell the necessary parts to convert, say an 11 sp shifter, to 12 sp etc.
Need to do a bit of googling to see if one of them has what you want, as no one seems to cover all bases.
One chap I occasionally ride with runs this company: https://ratiotechnology.com/

IIRC, that was for the vapourware new 11spd XTR cassette that shared cog spacing with the 12spd stuff (not any other 11spd stuff). It’s of no use to you. Or anyone (unless they’re sawing they biggest cog off a 12spd cassette).
that first gen 11/12spd XTR was the one that apparently had a fairly high failure rate. I believe it just removed the last click like the 2/3 front shifter did.
11speed 9100 xtr was intended for raceday weight savings. just ditched the 51t so no change to pull ratio
I’m pretty sure the 11 and 12s rear mechs have the same pull ratio, so an 11s shifter pulling a 12s mech should work on an 11s cassette (or 12s shifter, 11s mech on 12s cassette if it would reach the big sprockets).
The M6100 and M5100 mechs look remarkably similar.

That's how MrsPs bike ran for a few rides when "someone" ordered the wrong cage size 12sp mech. slx 11sp mech with 12sp xt shifter and cassette, all worked fine.
