Trying to fix a mate's Trek ProCaliber which has an odd rumble coming from the drivetrain - specifically it seems to be emanating from the lower jockey wheel....and I'm stumped!

- 11spd - SLX cassette/KMC chain/XT r-mech/RaceFace double ring crank - under 2months old
- Everything appears to be in full working order and gears are set-up correctly, all bearings running free, everything done-up tight etc
- I've reset the gears, tried changing b-tension screw, all to no avail

The issue is worse when using gears 11/10/09/08 on the rear - Help!

Not that this helps but I've got a similar issue. XT cassette / mech / cranks, KMC chain, Absolute Black oval ring (all non-boost). The sounds is like the top jockey wheel is too close to the cassette but it isn't and the sounds seems to be coming from the lower one.

Wondering if it's the chainline causing issues with the cabin rubbing on the ring and the sound travelling.

Do you get a 'notchy' feel if you pedal forward really slowly?

Hi. Difficult to try and diagnose from the above, but..

How have you checked the bearings - just by spinning things or by actually taking stuff apart and feeling them? Just because they run free doesn't mean they don't have issues / play under load. Have you checked the freehub bearings also?

Can you try a different wheel to eliminate that from the equation?
Is the chain routed correctly through the rear mech?

Also check that the mech hanger and mech itself are not bent.

I appear to have fixed it! Resetting the rear-mech, notably lower-limit screw plus the b-tension reduced the 'rumble'. This morning I've just thoroughly washed/degreased the whole drivetrain (chain had built-up gunge) and applied a semi-dry lube (as opposed to the wet-lube on there previously) and now no rumble.

Much of the above echoes the stupid cyclical issues I have with Shimano 105 on my roadbike.... and why I run SRAM on my mtb's.

KMC chains are noticeably noisier in 11 spd guise than either SRAM or Shimano FWIW.

Interesting benpinnick - given your comment I'll stick with SRAM chains (and was considering KMC next time as previous good experiences with them).
