Relatively new to spannering on push bikes, so be gentle with me. My bike has just developed an issue where it will change up to the largest rear cog, but not change down from it (Shimano SLX 1 x 11). All the other gears change up and down fine it just hangs up in the easiest gear. I tried adjusting cable tension to no avail and did notice the jockey wheel was a bit too close to the cassette so adjusted the B tension a little to move it away. It still wouldn't shift off the large cog unless I nudged the deraillieur by hand. As an after thought, I tried moving the clutch lever to the off position and hey presto, gears shift perfectly.
I'm assuming this means I need to slacken off the clutch tension? Not done this before, is it easy to do? Any reason why this should suddenly be an issue, I'd have thought that if anything I would need to tighten it as components wear, not slacken it?
Clutch barrel needs cleaning and greasing. Easy job, plenty of YouTube videos. I use marine grease.
Thanks, just found some YouTube stuff. I'll give that a try.
Yeah, in my experience slx mechs need constant clutch maintenance (greasing). XT seem to be fine. I think the clutch mechanism on XT and xtr is a little different to slx/ Deore.
Make sure you don’t use oil. Use a light grease.
