Noticed last few rides that the shifting was getting a bit laggy going up the higher gears and thought it was just an indexing issue so finaly got around to sorting it. Sram X01 gearing set up Hope branded cables. Full length outers so only exposed where it enters rear mech and at one year old inner cable still looking very shiny and new, stainless steel?
Anyway, no matter what adjustments I made I could not get it shifting quickly and smoothly, B-tension spot on, mech hanger aligned and all. Shifting into lower gears no problem just coming back up the range. Undid cable from mech and manually shifted through the gears, no problems so must be a cable issue. Had a new inner in the shed so decided to fit that.
Opened up the shifter to see a rats nest of one strand of gear inner, nicely jamming up the shifter. Right sod to tease it all out. Not a sign of rust anywhere on the old inner just snapped a strand for some reason. New inner fitted and all works perfectly.
Anyway, something to look out for if experiencing similar issues.
Seen it quite a lot on road shifters.
Yes, I've had a lot on road STIs, never seen it on an MTB shifter though. I wonder why?
Always fun and games getting the little stabby bit out of a very confined space
Hah! Yeah by the time I had snipped through a few loops that were wrapped around the spring there were quite a few little stabby bits.
I've had that once. No idea what causes it, probably just being a bit careless fitting the cable. Nightmare to unjam.
Ah, this is interesting, I've got a similar issue on one of my roadie bikes; it will shift down through the lowest three gears on the (10-spd) cassette fine, but it struggles shifting back up. I'll have a look at the state of the inner in the shifter.
Couple of times on road bike yes, once in the shifter (Shimano natch) and once under the BB with internal routing the cable got down to one strand before I found the cause. Never on an MTB though.
Replacement inner is my first go to for any shifting issue after adjustment.
Had it once on Ultegra. Then cable snapped and I thought new shifter time. Until I took apart. And yes, lots of stabby bits.
Quite common it would seem, never had it before myself.
