Had the mech hanger shear off on me this morning while grinding uphill. Never happened to me before. Replacement with the spare in my tool pouch was easy enough, but both the original and this spare were cheapie eBay jobs (Noah and Theo). Similar items from the likes of BETD are over twice the price. Does the collective hive mind consider the (assumed) increased quality is worth paying, or have I just been unlucky?

How long did it last? How long did it's (OE?) predecessor last?

or have I just been unlucky?

Entirely possible.

I'm not going to say that what you have is bad, but, the difference between good and bad is pretty big- on my old Hemlock they had a batch that were absolute monkey metal, when they snapped you could see how crap the alu. MC of this forum cnc'd some for me that still could bend if they had to but were tough enough not to just tear off instantly. Huge difference.

These days most hangers seem to be much tougher than they were- the one on my trek would take a hell of a lot to bend it. In the 90s it was an important job because everything was delicate but these days I'd rather have survivability. And it's not like bending or breaking is automaticlaly better, the worst damage I ever had was a broken hanger that let the entire mech fall into teh wheel and destroy mech, spokes, and race.

2500km on the snapped one - bought both at the same time to go on a second hand frame that turned up without a hanger. Seem to have got away it in terms of extra damage, despite the mech whizzing round into the spokes and shipping the chain down the back of the cassette.

Hmm, I've answered my own question - BETD it is!

Obvious point is obvious but there's every chance the hanger isn't at fault and there's damage to the frame where it mounts allowing it to rotate or twist, either of which would result in the damage in your photo.

There's a good reason the frame came without a hanger and it's because something got damaged. There's then a good reason it for sold without a cheap part that takes significantly more off the sale value of the frame.

Not saying that is the case of course but blaming the hanger might be unfair. (Could easily be a loose bolt as opposed to fit that caused that.)

It was just a cheap frame (also needed a BB cable guide before I could use it). Rear triangle is aligned, dropout seems solid, and it's done 2500km heavy duty service so far. The bolt wasn't loose. I'll bosh on the BETD hanger when it gets here and see how it goes.

I've had a betd one go like that. I did **** it of a rock though.
Given the mechanism of damage I'm not surprised it snapped like that.
I'd just buy another ebay one tbh.
