You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Up in the lakes yesterday, as we set off from the car, while oiling his chain my mate accidentally got oil on his disks (didn't know it) and soon pads and disk were contaminated.
So whipped the pads out and the disk off the wheel and "washed" them both in mud and grit. Making sure they were well roughed up. washed them off in a stream.
Hey presto back to full working ordr.
Seemed common sense to me, but he was really impressed.
What other tips have you got?
Keep both wheels in contact with terra firma in order to maintain steerage, traction - and braking.
Don't sit on the back tyre and get your balls sucked down between the seatstays.
Always ensure you have a saddle fitted to your bike before you set off so you can sit down and rest periodically during your ride. Top tip.
Pedal harder to go faster uphill, brake less to go faster downhill and steer occasionally.
2 pedals are better then 1
make sure you have reserved a parking space for your SUV at the trailhaed
😉
Check all quick release levers before you set off.
allways carry a emergancy pork pie in you pack.
Always carry a split link.
Don't eat yellow snow.
be careful not to contaminate your disks and pads when oiling your chain 😯
Have gears and suspension on your bike.
Do not wear tight lycra if a bloke.
Slow in, fast out.
Look where you want to go, not at the obstacles.
Learn to shift your weight.
Gears and suspension are for lazy ****ers with no skill...
The look the look... That's the most important. And brake after the obstacle not before.
Don't have your brake and shifter clamps done up to tight. So in a crash they will then move round your bars rather than snap off.
just ride the **** bike, oil on discs just makes them squeal like * and stops you using them too much! 😉
Don't get hung up on what you ride just get out and ride. Been a bike snob, but now enjoy my 3 year old Surly 1x1 more than any bike
less braking = less pedalling
Don't post pics of your bike here unless you have a thick skin.

😀 😆
Speed is your friend.
goretex socks - i am forever in debt to a very lovely welsh girl who many years ago put me onto these winter essentials.
Always carry some jellybabies 😀
Don't get lost or killed
Wear very tight lycra if you are a fit bird! 😉
always have beer at home for the shower afterwards.
When measuring a new chain, Don't cut it the same length as the current chain that is too short!! (and def don't do it while on the trail!)
REMEMBER - you only crash when you're braking so DON'T BRAKE on scary things. Ride them out
Next time you're out on your bike, carry an old tin bucket and 4-5 litres of water.
In the event of a flat tyre this will help you locate any punctures you may have.
Never put your finger where you wouldn't put your dick
Foot Out, Flat Out!
Have a skinful the night before til you feel ill, have 4 hours sleep then be sick on way to ride, dont eat but DO drink plenty of water - eat 3 jellybabies when you can and you'll be flying !!!
Worked for me yesterday, strongest ive ever rode 😕

You shower in beer? Thats crazy!
Refuel and water with every stop. You need the energy supply to maintain concentration.
Camel backs are dirty contaminated vessels but a godsend to mountain bikers. Just make sure you wash and sterilise it.
XC racers: disguise the fact you're taking performance enhancing steroids by riding a little slower.
No shower at work? Walk into the office nice and clean after a muddy commute by wrapping yourself in clingfilm before you leave home and just remove it when you arrive at work.
A certain amount of credit to Viz for those two, I can't claim to be that creative!
Do not wear tight lycra if a bloke.
Here is Wisdom.
dont fall off

i would have disagreed with this before today's ride...
Duct tape the cuffs of your goretex socks to your legs. But shave legs first. A hot tip from elliptic on here.

My sealskins today had about a cup of water in each.
Next time might gaffer tape the top of the socks to stop the water running donw my leg into the sock (or superglue)
Get a pair of domestic rubber gloves.
Cut across each glove, just above the thumb.
Pull on over your socks so that the tightest section is against your leg, thereby creating a seal.
Put the slacker section over the top of your sock.
if it's wet enough for waterproof socks wear trousers too.
Have your butler ride the wet sections.
do not waste time and money trying to keep dry
embrace the weather. 8)
Always have plenty of excuses ready for why you: fell off/walked that last bit/are slow.
You may be going slower than the optimum/safest speed on certain technical sections - realise that and you realise that speed is you friend....
DrP
Be loose and the bike will flow over the obstacles
dont fall off, it hurts.
stay relaxed and loose. Its supposed to be fun 😀
This one works for pushbikes and motorbikes- if you can't flap your elbows like you're doing the birdie song, you're too tense/stiff. So get flapping!

just buy these scree gators ...cheap and brilliant 8)
always a good ride with a hip flask with slow gin or damsin vodka 😉
Have fun.
Mountainbiking is not STW.
Suckit in and man up!!!!!
Gears and suspension are for lazy ****ers with no skill...
People who feel the need to broadcast that they ride a singlespeed have issues...
To save your bikes coming off your car at 40mph and skidding across the road, buy a van.
Lack of time on a bike makes some folks grumpy on internet forums.
Gel pouches make great tyre boots.
Ride the line, even if it is wet and muddy.
"Ride the line, even if it is wet and muddy".Thats not a tip...it should be the law.
If it was there would be a lot of bikers doing porrige. And it's usually the same ones that don't like Crudcatchers either.
Edit; (adopts poncy voice) erggh I don't want to get muddy but I don't want to ruin the looks of my bike with crudcatchers, I'll get off or go round it.
'I STOP FOR MUD'
How much for a thousand stickers?
Its not just mud,the decent from the end of Llyn Crafnant down to Capel Curig is techfest gem.Rode it a couple of weeks ago and some arses had very recently churned up a chicken run down the side of all the best bits-turns out to be a club ride and most of them on 5 and 6" "all mtn" bikes....ffs.
Be safe carry a Beagle.
Don't turn up to what is essentially an uplift day with a 2.1 Kenda Nevegal on the rear of a hardtail unless you want to spend more time fixing punctures than riding. Dual Ply's are your friend.
Their ears get caught in the spokes-better off with a chawawa stuffed in yer camelback.
Tips?
Do not back horses.
CAKE!

Pi$$ing it down
People are rushing you to hurry up...
That you remember to put the front wheel (you removed 15 minutes ago) into the boot of the car before heading off on your journey... 😉
M = Mates
T = Treats
B = Bikes
F*ck all this stay loose nonsense, just get out with your mates, on your bikes and take sweets 🙂
+1 Woody2000 😀
If your grips are slipping round the bar and your too cheap to buy lock ons put electrical tape round the bar wash the grips out with a a little bit of petrol and re install grips onto the electrical tape, the petrol melts the tape a bit and they are very strongly bonded to the bar. Don't put your finger in the disc when the wheel is spinning! Contrary to other posts always wear Lycra it makes you faster via the placebo effect! Finally from Henry Ford: "If you think you can or you think you can't your right."

Worked fine for me at Fort William 😉
Remember to check the tube you've put in your Camelbak is the right diameter for the wheels on your bike.
Over-exaggerate the amount you move the bike around if you want it to actually have an effect on riding.
For the "what tyres for..." crowd; riding the same tyres long enough to know when they will grip and when they'll slide is much more useful/relevant than what someone on the internet thinks is good for them, on their bike, where they ride (all of which are probably different to your situation or you wouldn't need to ask online!)
For every hour you ride a trail, spend 15mins doing trail work to keep it up to scratch and give us all more trails to ride.
Remember to check the tube you've put in your Camelbak is the right diameter for the wheels on your bike.
Or just go tubeless. And never have to worry about fixing a puncture again.
