Up in the lakes yesterday, as we set off from the car, while oiling his chain my mate accidentally got oil on his disks (didn't know it) and soon pads and disk were contaminated.

So whipped the pads out and the disk off the wheel and "washed" them both in mud and grit. Making sure they were well roughed up. washed them off in a stream.

Hey presto back to full working ordr.

Seemed common sense to me, but he was really impressed.

What other tips have you got?

Keep both wheels in contact with terra firma in order to maintain steerage, traction - and braking.

Don't sit on the back tyre and get your balls sucked down between the seatstays.

Always ensure you have a saddle fitted to your bike before you set off so you can sit down and rest periodically during your ride. Top tip.

Pedal harder to go faster uphill, brake less to go faster downhill and steer occasionally.

Slow in, fast out.

Look where you want to go, not at the obstacles.

Learn to shift your weight.

The look the look... That's the most important. And brake after the obstacle not before.

Don't have your brake and shifter clamps done up to tight. So in a crash they will then move round your bars rather than snap off.

When measuring a new chain, Don't cut it the same length as the current chain that is too short!! (and def don't do it while on the trail!)

Next time you're out on your bike, carry an old tin bucket and 4-5 litres of water.
In the event of a flat tyre this will help you locate any punctures you may have.

Refuel and water with every stop. You need the energy supply to maintain concentration.

Camel backs are dirty contaminated vessels but a godsend to mountain bikers. Just make sure you wash and sterilise it.

XC racers: disguise the fact you're taking performance enhancing steroids by riding a little slower.

No shower at work? Walk into the office nice and clean after a muddy commute by wrapping yourself in clingfilm before you leave home and just remove it when you arrive at work.

A certain amount of credit to Viz for those two, I can't claim to be that creative!

Duct tape the cuffs of your goretex socks to your legs. But shave legs first. A hot tip from elliptic on here.

My sealskins today had about a cup of water in each.

Next time might gaffer tape the top of the socks to stop the water running donw my leg into the sock (or superglue)

Get a pair of domestic rubber gloves.
Cut across each glove, just above the thumb.
Pull on over your socks so that the tightest section is against your leg, thereby creating a seal.
Put the slacker section over the top of your sock.

This one works for pushbikes and motorbikes- if you can't flap your elbows like you're doing the birdie song, you're too tense/stiff. So get flapping!

If it was there would be a lot of bikers doing porrige. And it's usually the same ones that don't like Crudcatchers either.

Edit; (adopts poncy voice) erggh I don't want to get muddy but I don't want to ruin the looks of my bike with crudcatchers, I'll get off or go round it.

Its not just mud,the decent from the end of Llyn Crafnant down to Capel Curig is techfest gem.Rode it a couple of weeks ago and some arses had very recently churned up a chicken run down the side of all the best bits-turns out to be a club ride and most of them on 5 and 6" "all mtn" bikes....ffs.

If your grips are slipping round the bar and your too cheap to buy lock ons put electrical tape round the bar wash the grips out with a a little bit of petrol and re install grips onto the electrical tape, the petrol melts the tape a bit and they are very strongly bonded to the bar. Don't put your finger in the disc when the wheel is spinning! Contrary to other posts always wear Lycra it makes you faster via the placebo effect! Finally from Henry Ford: "If you think you can or you think you can't your right."

Over-exaggerate the amount you move the bike around if you want it to actually have an effect on riding.

For the "what tyres for..." crowd; riding the same tyres long enough to know when they will grip and when they'll slide is much more useful/relevant than what someone on the internet thinks is good for them, on their bike, where they ride (all of which are probably different to your situation or you wouldn't need to ask online!)

For every hour you ride a trail, spend 15mins doing trail work to keep it up to scratch and give us all more trails to ride.
