am mulling over getting me a custom frame made. anyone have any dealings with shand cycles? i seem to remember someone may have one of their bikes on here...
'shand'... isn't that short for second hand?
not sure I'd want that written on my shiny new custom frame 🙂
I've just started discussions with them this week for a custom winter roadie/cx/touring bike. Really excited at getting a custom frame, should be ready about mid January 8)
I think Cynic-Al may have one but he seems to be AWOL.
I've drooled over his Flickr site for a couple of years and [s]if[/s] when I [s]was to[/s] get a custom frame built I'll go to him. Lovely looking fillet brazing.
Posts on here occasionally too.
dirtygirl - all the usual questions then. how did they size it? what's the assembly time? what are they like? did you get the p[roducion frame or get it custom made? what sort of price? but most importantly, how good is it!
I've only just started discussions with Steven so can only outline what's happened so far: I emailed to say what I was looking for / outline my requirements. Steven came back with some options for a) production frame b) semi custom or c) custom - and a rough figure of costs and timescales. I'm too small for their own frame so i'm going semi custom or custom (likely to be custom knowing me!)
I've had a bike fit done so sent him over my measurements and he's going to get back to me with some thoughts. I'm then going to take my bikes with me and go meet him to discuss. I'll be writing about the process on my blog (see profile for link)
I'd suggest emailing them - very quick response from Steven with all the information I need at this stage and I know Russ who works for Shand too. I've opted to go custom because I can't get an 'off the shelf' bike to fit but I'm going to Shand mainly because I know Russ and I know he'll do a good job (he'd better or i'll kick his ass on the bike next year 😛 )
Mustard - you know you'll end up getting one when you come with me to see Steven... 😈
so you go to the website? thanks marty, that was beyond me for a moment there...
i'm sure i will be having a lovely conversation with them sometime soon. i was curious to see how people who'd had any dealings with them found them.
dirtygirl, i'll keep up to date on your progress. me, i'm right in the middle of median when it comes to bike size so maybe one of their new frames will probably do me. i just fancy something made in scotland and, better yet, not a million miles away from where i grew up
They do look good and the idea of custom made in Scotland appeals.
However generally if i like the look of something and cant find the price of it on their website then that usually means it is out my price range!
Hey Omar,
we're in a bit of a transition at the moment, we have some production frames due for launch in Feb next year and we're still confirming exact pricing. As soon as we've got that nailed down, it'll go onto the site.
Since most of our other work is all fully custom, it's difficult to publish prices but you can expect to pay minimum of £1200 for a custom frame. If you want to, you can sign up to our mailing list (it's on the site) and we'll keep you up to date.
