Got a 2006 Inbred in SS configuration sat languishing in the shed.
Toying with the idea going 1 x 11 in the hope that I'll ride the damn thing as winter bike to keep the bearing bills don on my SS.
Wheels, brakes and forks are OK. Seat post is fused in the frame so have to get it out and replaced with a dropper. It will need a complete 1 x 11 groupset.
Is it worth it or should I just get a new slightly better than entry level HT from the LBS?
Er, just get it out and ride it? If the seatpost is the right height, then just use it for a bit to see how it feels?
I want gears. Didn't get on with it being SS.
Not really sure on the geometry on the Inbred but hardtails have changed quite a bit recently. depends how happy you were with the handling of the Inbred and what sort of riding you want to do. It'll likely still be fine and fun so I'd probably stick some gears on it.
If it's a size large then maybe you should sell it and get a new one...
Pounce on that SRAM drive train in the classifieds, you'd only need a mech
Reckon you've missed it, get cheapo 8/10 speed. Be reet for bodding about on
Do you have any old 9 speed stuff? In which case stick with that. On my inbred I find 11-32 cassette fine but if you want wider range you can get 11 -42 cassette so much cheaper than a full upgrade for what is your winter bike
Why not ride it round for a bit as it is, just to decide whether the geometry etc. suits you keeping it?
If you like it, then keep it & make the changes.
There's an article in STW (last month I think) about a guy who gets seatposts out of frames....
I'm in the process of refurbing my singlespeed. Splashing out on a powder coat and and replacing a few of the old tatty bits.
It has a place, it's not worth selling and it's a bit of fun tarting it up.
In your case I'd do it as cheap as possible. If you are not that enthused then you might as well get something new if they have stock. Especially if you get something a bit different - a race hardtail for covering easy miles or something like the Trek roscoe for big fat tyre fun.
Just built up my Summer Season again, using old 9 speed gear but with a new 11 40 cassette and chain (too short). Sounds like you already have the chain set and ring. Slacken off the seat post clamp and go for a ride, it just might move. Definitely recommend resurrecting you old Inbred it's gotta be better than a BSO from the LBS.
I'd flog it, You could end up finding other stuff that is end-of-life or non compatible etc

It's an inbred, the dropouts are cut from steel plate and the BB is threaded. It's about as universally compatible as bikes get!
I still quite like my old inbred. Sure it doesn't plow through everything like a modern bike but it does the job.
If you have a Hope (or CK) singlespeed hub you can run six or seven gears on that. The lowest six sprockets from an XT 9 speed cassette (so 17-34t) will fit if you machine a few mm off the inside of the aluminium carrier and if you take the outside of 5he carrier down flush with the 17t sprocket you can also fit 14t sprocket for a cruising gear.
I’m using this on my Hummingbird at the minute - Zee 10 speed mech and Sram X9 shifter. All works perfectly...
Harry - it’s a shame you don’t work at a place where blokes can remove seized seat posts in return for beer...
My 2006 slidey dropout inbred was my second bike / fun-way-commuter for years but recently I've been riding it way more than my "main" bike, a similarly aged 5-spot. It works, it doesn't seem to be wearing out and is easy to maintain. The seat post is also fused to the frame; I keep meaning to ask an LBS to see if they can fix it to swap the dropper from the other bike.
I did see someone else on one a few weeks ago; they are nothing if not conspicuous. Every other bike used to be one back in the day, it was great.
Woke up my ancient 456, took the alfine off and fitted some old 1x 10 speed and it's great.
Scarier on the tech stuff than I remembered compared to my current bike but a great do it all bike and you get to use up some of the 6 bazillion 559 bits I have hanging around.
I use my Inbred as a rigid XC / road / gravel SSer. With an old 60mm stem on it feels short compared to my modern hardtail, but nimble and comfy. It feels retro but I bought it from new only in 2014. Scary thing is, I remember getting the frame from On One for £125. Doubt you'd get much change out of 500 nowadays.
