Hi, I'm after recomendations for spare set of wheels for my Aeroad

[img] [/img]

It currently has 62mm deep Reynolds Strikes but I'm after something for hilly/windy rides in the lakes (Fred whitton style)

Must be tubless compatable, preferably on the wide side, I run 25mm Ones at the moment, alu or carbon, £1000 - 1500 - but I'm flexible on price if they are sexy 8)

Cheers njee, do you think the low profile will look ok on the Aeroad ? I know it's just cosmetics but I don't want the wheels to look out of place

Bearing in mind the wheels you have already and the budget you have, I'd go for a light, low profile carbon clincher I reckon. How about these Black Series by Wiggle?, 1129 grams a pair apparently and they look pretty good to me. Zipp 303 Firecrest is another option, not as light though.

I ride ENVE 65's for everything - I'd just leave the Reynolds on

Are you actually struggling with them in the wind?

Other than that ENVE have a terrible resale value it seems, plenty available used around the £1k mark

3k carbon on them black series, looks cheap compared to UD

Mavs' M40C's.

You can end the thread right there if you like.

Yes, I used to ride 38mm and found them managble but with the 62mm I feel like the fronts going to take off as I pass every farmers gate, I guess it does not help that I'm 68kg

I was going match a lower profile Reynolds front (Attack 29mm, Assault 41mm) but can't get them in the limited edition Canyon style 😥

I'd go 35mm for all round and aero looks compatibility 😉 DO you want carbon clinchers for braking on a wet fred?

Not really! i hate carbon rims in the wet but I must admit the Reynolds are a bit better than others I've had, that said I can't wait for discs to become main stream, loving my Shimano Hydros on the commuter

how about Mavic R-SYS SLR, about 400g lighter than the Reynolds, not aero though but with Exalith braking surface which is nice and black, requires special pads though, however works great in the wet

Yes the Mavic R-Sys seem great but I'm just not sure they will look right on the Aeroad (any photoshop experts in the house ?)

or google!

Doesn't really look wrong to me. Does that black coating wear off?

FWIW I love my Corima 32mms, they're tubs but available in clincher. Odd depth - not really aero, not really climby, but off the shelf spokes (sapim). Internal nipples are a pain for me, have to pull the tub off to true, obviously easier for clincher. Living in Pais Vasco all I ever do is hilly rides, I've got some 950g 24mms for really heavy days but the Corimas do everything well so far.

Would look rubbish with shalllow rims, new bike is the obvious answer.

FWIW I'd go for something in the 35-40mm range (probably the wheelsmith ones unless you have a big budget.) Quite like those Corima wheels too but the internal nips could well put me off.

no, you get some green residue off the pads but no wear

The coatings coming of on the rear wheel on mine. Not all over just in patches a few inches long.

I built up some of the Light Bike 35 mm u shape tubeless rims on DT hubs with cxrays. So impressed I'm selling my Zipp 202s!

Incidentally, how is the Aeroad, Im pondering the same model?

looks all kinds of wrong to me, especially with the solid Q ring. Has someone forgotten to fit tyres to them?!

Always disliked the look of aero bikes but the aeroad, especially in that red/black looks lovely.

Aeroroad needs aero wheels, just get some m40c's which are light, stiff, and perfect. That ^ ugly Aeroroad with R-Sys on it looks gopping.

Yes, it's not really a pretty bike. Don't think it's much better with those 62mm on in the OP's photo. May look a bit better with some mid-depth wheels.

Why not just get a 30-40 depth wheel for the front where it matters? You could get a matching Reynolds wheel.

Surely a Mavic Ksyrium SLR or R-Sys SLR should be an option?

EDIT already been done I see. But still would be my recommendation.

I'm looking for a similar wheel set for my cervelo s3
seriously tempted by Spin K2 Carbone XLR38 25mm Fat Boy Clincher wheels.
Getting good reviews.

Or just build some light bike 38s on some American Classic hubs I have.

The spin wheels will just be chinese carbon rims, so you could put them together yourself cheaper

Not sure why Zipp 303's or M40C's aren't already bought TBH. Struggle to find anything light and reliable as either of these. Both proven track record in either racing or general fast hack riding and both have decent warranties too. I'd steer clear of Lighweight's, not sure if anyones pushed these forward but IME they're both expensive and shite.

You could of course go cheap and heavy, but then you kinda know that.

And, IMO, I'd change the tyres you are using to something more supple like Strada LGG 25mm, something like an open clincher with cotton sidewalls.. You know like the pro's use (ok not Tubs, we all know that) I'm running Strada's on M40C's at 100 &110psi and they're the best tyres I've ever had (and I've run some pretty spanky stuff in my time) Pretty darn perfect for your Fred W stint.

Last input from me that..

The Reynolds are a canyon specific model and not available as single items from Canyon or Reynolds

Doesn't really look wrong to me

I must disagree, that pic has definitely put me off shallow wheels on an Aeroad

Not sure why Zipp 303's or M40C's aren't already bought

The M40C's don't get great reviews recently -'to narrow, old pointy shape is old fashioned and catches the wind'
Zipp 303's are an option but.....

I have just picked up some farsports 38mm on Bitex hubs for £50, so not very sexy but I may give them a whirl and maybe see what 2016 wheels come out (updated Mavic's would be nice)

Get some Lightweights.

Note that I've not read the OP fully and I've been spending a lot of time on weightweenies so that might have skewed my opinion.
