Well this has me reaching with a cuppa.
I have set up literally 100's of cassettes and gears, but this has me stumped.

I have set the limiting screws H and L correctly.
My problem is, If the cable is too tight I can get largest cog and not smallest and if too loose I can get the smallest but not largest. Common ground appears not to exist.

What daft thing am I missing?

All brand new 11 speed XT.

I'm sure someone with more expertise will be along shortly, but if you've got it shifting correctly in the smallest sprockets, what is it doing when you move up to the biggest sprocket? If it is struggling/rattling on the biggest couple of sprockets, try increasing b-screw clearance a bit.

Also check whether the gear cable is routed correctly to the mech.

Yep, it was the B screw being too tight.
I think I am just a bit tired and rushing it.
Routed through old outers and that's just lazy - so tomorrow is another day.

I fitted an 11-46 yesterday. Even with what looked like plenty of top jockey wheel clearance the cage fouled the 46 when it was on the 37. The whole thing runs much better with lots of clearance, more than I'm used to setting on 9sp.

Most of my attempts at indexing involve copious swearing until I wake up and the step I missed out becomes clear.

Cable tension is absolutely critical I’ve found. If there is the slightest bit too much then the feeble spring in the mech won’t let it drop down into the smallest cog. You also need to make double sure all the pivot points on the mech are lubed up including the ones you can only see with the bike upside down.

What an eejit, turns out I was threading it through the front mech internal guide plate and then through the rear stay. The correct guide plate made the fitting a complete doddle, any Wally could do. Glad I had that tea.
