Will a length of 40mm waste pipe do the job?
Cheers
Cut through the crown race and just slide it on the steerer. Like the Hope ones.
I use a soft faced mallet and just tap around the race at 12,3,6,9 O'clock gradually and carefully until the noise changes which lets me know the part is now home.
Always done it that way, never had an issue.
All i do is put the headset/stem/etc back together and tighten up the stem cap bolt and the crown race is moved down, just need to remove headset spacers as you go...no issues and no bearings prematurely destroyed
40mm pipe gets my vote 😉

never had a crane creek headset where the crown race has a built in seal.
No, only ever fitted FSA pigs back in the day or Chris King's now I can afford them.
To be honest most headsets I fit on other peoples bikes are Hope's for the split race. They can get nervous when they see the hammers come out on there lovely new forks. I trust me own work though so happy to flog away at my own kit.
can't remember what size it was, I took the race to B&Q and bought the relevant size pipe 🙂Will a length of 40mm waste pipe do the job?
one a side note, this size is more fragile than the pipe I've got for 1 1/8"
Klunk, thats the exact CR I've got to fit so not keen and splitting it or hitting at 12, 3, 6 & 9 for fear of damaging the seal.
Will nip to B&Q for a length of 40mm pipe...if it doesn't fit its only £2.97 down the pan!
Cheers
