You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Yes yes, "bought Eggbeaters", very droll 😀 . I like them.
Anyway, I've removed the axles and bearings no problem, but when I came to remove the glide bushing, I:
1. Put the pedal in a 16mm socket, bushing side down.
2. Inserted the proper Crank Brothers rod tool from a service pack.
3. Gave it a few gentle taps with a hammer.
4. Promptly reamed out the inside of the bush so that the rod can now pass straight through it...
Any ideas what now? The bushing is too hard to pry out with a screwdriver, and there isn't enough room in the pedal body to get a screwdriver behind the lip either.
Melt it out maybe?
Has the bushing not moved at all? They can take a couple of slightly angular goes to remove...
Not a micron. I did try using the fractional bit of play in the rod, but it's still now just passing through the middle of the bush.
Got a teensy tiny bearing puller? Back before they shifted to bushings in everything I've had the outer race of bearings stay put, I've managed to tap those out eventually using a small screwdriver from the opposite end but it's not a fun job. Bushing should be easier at least as it's not smaller than the shoulder it's sat on.
Thanks, I think I may need to invest in a tiny bearing puller. They are the Eggbeater 3s so not cheap, I need to try and salvage the situation somehow.
Can you find a bolt that will thread into the bush to enable it to be pulled out? Even if it breaks the bush it should help with extraction
It's only plastic. You can bang something sharp (small screwdriver) down between the bush and the pedal body and break it up. You might scratch the pedal body a bit but that doesn't really matter. It's a lot easier than getting the outer race out used to be.
yep - as onewheelgood says, small screwdriver behind the bush and lever it until it cracks and you can pick the bits out. Dont think i've ever serviced a set where that wasn't the case!
3. Gave it a few gentle taps with a hammer.
This doesn't quite seem right to me, when I do it I remember it being:
3. with rod at an angle, smack bushing really hard until it pops out
Crank Bros pedals are a bit annoying as the bushing only has a tiny bit of overlap over the lip in the pedal body, there's not a whole lot to access to knock out from behind.

I've not done it before. I made the mistake of watching the Crank Brothers service video, which of course shows it popping out with the ease of, er, something really easy.

Reassuring, thanks! So just to clarify - I don't need to come in from the back of the bushing (which would be pretty hard given the angles involved), I can just attack from the front?
Sorted - I hammered a jeweller's screwdriver down the side of the bushing (without stigmata-ing myself, bonus). That didn't crack the bushing - they seem too soft for that - but it deformed it enough for me to use the Crank Brothers tool as inteded from the other side.
Easy when you know how - I think stripping the other pedal down took less than two minutes.
Yep. Just get a small screwdriver between the body and the bush then tap it down. The bush will start to fold in on itself. Prise it a bit with the screwdriver and it should come out. I’ve had eggs for 20 years and bushes always get changed with a screwdriver and a hammer!.
