i used some foam from laminate underlay, but i'd say wheels wrapped in bubblewrap and then in a cardboard outer would be best.

i used these for a bike bag recently

Cardboard only has been fine for me, in between wheels too and tripled up on pointy bits.

cardboard box plus a piece of card in between.

I tend to put some additional card over the hub ends to stop them punching their way through the outside fo the box as well. tape the skewers to some spokes if they're included.

I got a pair of wheels wrapped in 2 bin bags off here so anything you do more than that is good!

From experience I recon if you'r sending them with tires its ok just to put them in the post, taped together with a sheet of card cut out to cover the spokes on each side. Never sent them like that but recieved a few pairs like that with no problems.

Best bet is put them in a decent cardboard box, then cover them in £20 notes to offer a bit of protection.

Try the LBS for an old wheel box. Then pad the hub spikey bits w/ extra card
