[Closed] Selling a road bike: how's best?

I have a 2011 56cm size SCOTT CR1 Team. Decent carbon frame, 105 throughout and aksium wheelset. Minimal use - probably no more than 1000 miles. Got a cross bike which is more suited to my riding and fact I prefer using waggonways etc than full-time road riding.

Its in good condition. Wondering where / how to sell. Seen similar go for £800 on ebay, £350 for frames. Is this the best route? Classifieds here or elsewhere? Would it be better to split and sell in parts or trying and sell all together?

As ever, best money to be had by splitting. Worth trying the classifieds here before eBay as no fees and possible to suss people out a bit. No idea what the frame is worth, but £350 doesn't sound at all unreasonable if it's as good as described. Groupset and wheels should fetch a few hundred too.

A popular bike in a good size, should sell easily complete. £700/£800 sounds fair, but you'll need to catch someone who is after one.

You can buy a brand new one with warranty for a little over a grand, and if you ask for discount....

Split a bike if a part is damaged and not replaceable, otherwise sell it complete. After all the faffing about breaking the bike down and then posting a zillion individual items, then always being left with parts you cant sell.

as oldgit says, i think 700-800 is a good shout for a complete bike put it on E-Bay as a second hand road bike will be on many peoples new year resolution lists im sure.

Bikeradar has an active road classifieds section but you need to have been a forum member for a certain length of time/number is posts before you can advertise I believe....

I find nothing really beats a thinly veiled forsale advert in the main forum for selling stuff... Much more effective than the forsale board ........

I've always found the best way is to put a 'Im selling a roadbike' in the wwrong section to get maximum coverage works.

Where? The cheapest I can find is £1300.

IME if it's a popular brand and a decent spec s/h bikes go for good money on ebay, sometimes overpriced. Always offer delivery, it makes a huge difference. Get an old bike box from the LBS, they have always been happy to give them away when I have asked. Use Senditnow for the courier, always been reliable when I have used them.

A lot less hassle then selling as parts.

I've always sold my/our bikes on here. May not make as much as it might on eBay but I price them to sell, don't get offended by offers and I'm willing to travel if necessary to meet up or deliver them.

I would sooner sell on here as the bikes will normally be going to a good home, and will some use, and you can always name and shame any idiots who mess you around. Which I have never needed to do.

Anyway, got a couple of kids bikes to shift soon after came....

You could talk to me about the groupset and wheels if you do split - I've got a similar Scott frame looking for those parts and might be interested

With the ridiculous cheapness of road components at merlin etc. right now it probably makes more sense to sell complete.

There are lots of people who wamnt a road biek but don't want or know how to build one.

Ebay for best price (but pay fees), here or Bikeradar should get you a good audience.

You are aware that bikes are just mass produced, inanimate, pieces, of aluminium, steel, rubber and plastic?

It's not like re-homing a dog or something!

What is the criteria for a good "home"?

Besides, why would a buyer from STW automatically offer a better "home" to a bike than ebay?

Personally, I would prefer to maximise the return to buy the replacement.

Thanks for the advice. I've never got to sell decent bikes before, I do upgrade almost as often as I hear Hora does 😉 but this usually because they've been nicked.

Sadly trail rat and hora my thinly veiled advert is not working yet, so I suppose I'd better take some photos before I get flamed for not having any. And then put a proper advert in the proper place?
