Not a stealth add I promise. Have someone from Gumtree who has tentatively agreed to buy my bike. I have arranged to meet him at a Supermarket carpark (would rather that he didn't come to my house and therefore aware that I have bikes onsite) and have said that if he wants to go for a test ride to leave me with his driving license. I have also swapped mobile numbers. It isn't for a lot of money but just wondered if there is something I should be doing differently to stop me getting ripped off...

Take a friend, don't let them test ride the bike unless they have given you the full asking as deposit.

This has generally served me well.

Take a chib. The guys only purpose is to rip you off, infact I suggest a pre-emptive strike just as he approaches. 😆

Your buyer is willing to buy a bike from a random guy on a super market car park ?

It is only £250 so guess there is little risk at that stage. I guess it isn't much different to buying something of a random person on eBay.

I've bought and sold many bikes in carparks. Perfectly normal especially if you've done the meet halfway thing.

Only flag is the test ride, what's he hoping it'll tell him with a £250 bike in a car park ?? You just need to look over the thing for damage or worn out stuff.

Gumtree is rife with scammers, seems like a good way to accidentally end up with a stolen bike if you ask me.

I would also be wary of selling one there too op, find a place on the car park with good cctv coveredge, if you have a dash cam do the deal infront of your car, as Jef said make sure the full cash sum is handed over before a test ride, stay in your car so you can make a quick escape if a few scrotes turn up to nick it.

Well the sale went off without a hitch. Gave me the money took it for a quick test ride. Was happy and went on his way. You can trust some people in this country!

I bought my last bike from Gumtree. He let me take it for a spin with no deposit, but my car was parked next to his the whole time too.
