Thinking of Selling my Cube 120mm full suss, I also have a 29er Hardtail which I'm using more over winter.

Now most of my riding these days is very tame, canal path cruising and very light xc trails. I do have access to some Rocky trails locally but the hardtail copes.

And apart from the odd trip to Gisburn forest I'm using the hardtail more.

The cube is currently in the garage cleaned and serviced as I don't want to put it through winter slop.

The only thing I prefer is the comfort of the Air forks over the Hardtails Rockshox coil forks.

Sell or will I regret it?

If you aren’t going to change your riding and you aren’t old and achy after a ride then sell it.

I suspect being a 120mm travel cube that’s it’s quite xc orientated so not different enough from your 29er.

In which case what I’m saying is you need a new bike - something a little more gnarpoony 🙂

How useful is having a spare bike for the same needs?

If you are going to ride new harder places get a bike that is different to your current bike for some contrast. This could be another hardtail but more hardcore or a more burly fs.

To be brutally honest, on my regular trails the 29er is faster and I don't really notice that it's a Hardtail, it rolls over everything.

It's a Marin Bobcat Trail 6 Deore 1x10, Rockshox Recon Coil forks. And it's been christened blue tank. For the money I paid £500 it's a fantastic bike, Air forks would transform it into a even better bike.

The Cube is plush, but it feels wasted on canal paths, woodland Single track. It's comfortable though on long rides.

But I don't like subjecting it to a wash after every ride because it's caked in mud, and I can't see frequent washing doing the bearings much good.

Was great in summer as it was Bone dry from April till mid September, only needed washing twice.

But just finding it hard to justify running two bikes.

May sell the full suss and Hardtail and pump £1700 towards a 29er 100-120mm hardtail?

Can't really see me riding rough technical trails, I'm happy plodding along on Greenways,Canal paths, cheeky single track.

That sounds a nice idea, the expensive 29er..... But, in my experience, don't. If you like the Marin and the forks are the only thing compromising it, sell the FS, sell the Recon's and get some nicer forks, and leave it at that.

For me, there's no correlation between how much money you have in a bike/how good it's meant to be and how much you enjoy it. In fact I think it could be inversely proportional. All that expectation, is it as good as you hoped, should it be better, etc etc.

Just ride the cheaper bike and keep doing so until you stop enjoying or it dies!

That’s a fair idea - the frame on a £1700 hardtail might not actually be a huge step up on the Marin. But you could spend £400-£500 on a decent air fork to stick on the Marin plus some decent tyres / tubeless. A Pike / Fox 34 or something along those lines would make a world of difference and probably be a better fork than you’d get on said £1700 hardtail.

Get a fox32 or fox 34 or even a rockshox Reba £200-250 new on a good day, should transform the front end ..

no point keeping bikes u don’t ride/need..

ps. Never sell a bike until you are happy with your new bike, if you can afford to wait

The changing forks sounds like a much better idea, I'd probably also bin the Alivio brakes on it for Deore Xt M8000.

The one big stumbling block is the front wheel is 9mm QR as opposed bike through or boost.

So limits the forks slightly.

I’m struggling to see the benefit of a HT over a sort travel FS especially when it’s a lower end HT bike.

As to extra maintenance- erm one rear shock and link........

Personally in your shoes I’d just keep the Cube and use it. The HT can be used as a pub bike / commuter etc.

Just not using it as much. I used to live in a Area where a short travel full suss was ideal and required. Now I've moved it's complete overkill. A 1700 pound full suss to ride canal paths is complete overkill.

I'm more of a plodder these days, plodding along canals, Greenways, wheels firmly on the ground.

I spent the first half of the year off the bike after a fractured and dislocated shoulder so I've decided I need take it easy now.

Completely ruined my cricket season, and don't want to risk that by being a knob on the bike.

Happy just getting out and exploring.

Okay maybe look at it this way a short travel FS is no more overkill than a HT in reality for exploring canals - maybe look at a gravel type bike.

You are traveling in comfort on the FS and with that travel not losing much in terms of bob / speed. You are also going to lose a considerable amount of dough selling it.

Sounds to me like you just want to sell the FS which if that’s what you want to do is a good enough reason.

Get rid and use cash for new wheel, fork and brakes.

I genuinely don't see the need for more than 1 bike if the riding you do is covered by the bike you ride...so sell and enjoy your riding.

I also don't see the benefit of putting a full bounce away for winter...our summer doesn't tend to be dry yet the bikes survives the summer mud, so why not the winter mud?

@dickbarton the main advantage of n+1 bikes is it mixes things up and usually guarantees you have one bike that is running well to ride, I have a few mates with only one bike, it’s dissapointing when they get ready to set off and realise a mechanical is going to stop play..

also after a really sh1tty wet cold muddy ride were you get home soaked through and it’s a hosepipe shower

the next day it’s far easier to jo on the gravel bike and do a cleaner loop to get the ride in.

with my hardtail I’m more than content to leave it covered in mud after an evening ride when I don’t have the time to clean for a few days, clean lube the chain and ride it again, when you’ve paid a lot of money for a full sus, mentally I want to keep it in tip top condition..

In this case I would sell the FS and spend the money on upgrades for the HT. I much prefer having 1 really nice bike than 2 ok bikes.

I usually change my bikes every three years. So have another spring and summer then come 2020 sell the full suss for another or sell both and buy a Hardtail.
But I can see myself going Hardtail as my next bike. But for now I'll keep both.
Full suss I'll use for longer rides and Hardtail a pub bike, quick ride and I will use it to commute to train station.

Sell both and get a gravel - after trying a few first, of course ;-P

120 / 120 mm bike for some "tame" XC trails: great! Keep it.

HT for the mud biking in winter.

Even if you don't feel a lot of advantage of the FS bike - to "change" the bike every coupls months or so is fun. And having two bikes always gives you the freedom to upgrade and work on one while still having the second "ready to go".

I sold my Five because I preferred my Fatty & 29er HT. On the three occasions I’ve been back to Bike Park Wales since I’ve hired one. Thrash it all day & hand it back. No meticulous washing or servicing to keep a FS healthy. Haven’t missed having a FS at all.

Been on the Hardtail today and it came back caked in mud. You could hardly see the colour blue on the frame.
This is exactly why my Full Suss goes away in winter. Plus Deore xt 11 speed cassette and chains are more expensive than deore 10 speed chains and cassettes. My next bike will be a 100-130mm hardtail. 29er but with the option for 27.5+ tyres.

I think I would consider selling and upgrading the hardtail. Personally I have stuck with a hard tail since in my local area a full sus is mostly overkill. Sure I can ride some bits faster but they will not be as much fun overall.
When I get to go away and play somewhere more challenging then by a couple of hours in I do start thinking a full sus is a good idea and I do always look at garage space and think doubling up is a good idea but havent quite fallen for it yet.

That won't be easy to sell IMO. Cube ain't a particularly sought after brand, and it ain't the best time of year...
