I’m in Epsom ,bike is oop north. Buyer is reluctant to post as the last person he posted a bike to said it didn’t turn up and fleeced the man for his money.
Is there a secure way to ensure that we can both prove delivery of bike?

You can take all the risk on yourself, eg arrange a courier to collect and do a balance transfer to pay. You'd need to really trust the seller though. I wouldn't do that unless they were a long time forum user. Do you not know anybody local? Or maybe ask someone on here to collect it, you give them the money, they post it. Its a big favour (and some risk) but there's some nice people here. Failing that drive up. Make a weekend of it. Maybe even get a ride in somewhere new.

As above. I've bought and sold a lot over the years. Did a 10 hour round trip to buy a frame. I've also met people halfway, so driven for a couple of hours to sell a bike.
There are some great riding spots up here so you could collect it and combine it with a day on the trails.
Posting a bike, which I have done, would always be a last resort for me and its also expensive with the right courier and insured. Its a hassle and a risk

Where is oop north? If its Tweed Valley I could get it and send it to you, got a spare box kicking about.
Why you should trust me over the seller though I don't know 🤷‍♂️
.
I've bought a frame and a van door by sending a local mate the money who then gives the seller cash and I collect next time I visit, that worked well

I drove a 7 hour round trip to buy my wife a bike recently. They didn’t offer postage on the eBay listing so I didn’t ask. It was a great deal so was worth it and removed ALL worry and stress out of the situation.
I don’t know why people don’t do it more often - ok some drives would be daft but if you’re paying thousands for a bike why not take a day out to go and collect it? The fuel cost is unlikely to be much more than the insured postage cost (and might be less) and you remove the possibility of a scam, damage in transit, you can check the bike before handing it over etc.
I know people are busy but I did my 7 hour trip after finishing work early and was back by midnight with an awesome bike and a no stress process!

I did an 8 hour round trip to Edinburgh to visit Pedals Bike Care for some new bearings in my frame.

It was a nice drive to be honest and I just made a day of it. I even got a posh toastie and sausage roll from Teabay services 🙂

Yeah oop north is a big place and seems to start at Watford Gap when you're from daan sarf, so where exactly is the bike?

I've driven from Leeds to Cannock after work to buy a bike for my son cas it was a bargain so wanted to get it quick. Only about 2 hours each way but it meant I bagged it.

BTW I would never trust anyone but the seller (who would bear the risk) to package the bike up well enough to survive a postal service.

You could arrange with the seller's LBS for him to take it in, and they look the bike over and pack it up for your courier - for a fee obvs.

I have done this in a similar situation.

Arrange to meet up and exchange.

I've done sales where we've agreed to meet half way (a couple of hours drive), or ones where I've agreed to deliver the whole way for additional cost to cover fuel.

Given the faff of getting a proper bike box, packing it properly, getting it to the courier, the cost of the courier itself + proper insurance, and the stress of possibly STILL getting ripped off, well - its a no-brainer for me!

Epsom to Mansfield is 3-3.5 hrs in the car. Arrange to meet at Watford Gap or Northampton services. That's a sensible half way point.
