I seem to recall it was actually to do with a bar-end-mounted satellite shifter that allowed you to change gear without moving your hands from the bar-ends.
RR FAIL.
DDAB has it.
Oh the shame. You mean my shifters are as old as bar ends...

That could be a really useful set up for touring riding with h bars or similar
