I ordered a basic BrandX 31.8mm Seatpost clamp from wiggle a couple of weeks ago. It arrived in a package labled as 31.8mm but the clamp itself had 34 stamped on the collar so I emailed Wiggle and they did a stock-check and then came back to me a couple of days later that they couldn't fulfill my order, apologized and refunded me and said keep the clamp.
So I ordered a no name one of ebay, 31.8mm again and it's just arrived. No packaging this time but the clamp again has 34 stamped on the collar. Am I just incredibly unlucky? or am I missing something? 🙂

Is your seatpost 31.8? If so, then a 34mm clamp might be the correct size.

Have you tried actually fitting it?

I suspect Scotroutes has it, seatpost size and collar size are not the same. Internal/external diameters of the seattube

Depends on the frame material and design, though? Can't really assume anything about the seat clamp size if all you know is seatpost size.

Edit: as per above, have you tried fitting it? 34 might be batch number, part number, just confusingly close to a seat post/seat clamp size.

This. Or measuring it.

31.8mm internal diameter seat clamps are ~34mm external iirc.

OK, so the seat post is 27.2
The OD of the steel seat tube is 30mm on the nose

^^ "Seatpost is 27.2mm you need a 31.8mm seat collar " this was the advise I was taking when I ordered, Cant remember where I read it previously.

If I fully tighten these ones I have with the 34 on them they are loose on the 30mm tube.
Guess I should try the next size down or something.

Why don't they just state this clamp is for seat-tubes between Xmm and Ymm that would make life simpler 🙂

“Seatpost is 27.2mm you need a 31.8mm seat collar ”

Which is bullshit, at least without some very specific further info. Most of the frames we've had in the house over the years have taken 27.2 seatposts: Ally Spesh Allez, steel Singulars, a dekerf, an Orange clockwork with a shim, a Jones and an ally pinnacle. At least 3 different seatclamp sizes.

Sounds like you’ve got 34mm collars, though the common size is 34.9/35… did you measure the internal diameter of the collar?

If you’ve got a seat tube of 30mm OD then ideally you need a collar of around 30.1 ID but I’m not sure that’s regularly available… Whereas a 31.8mm is the common for steel frames and should work, but if you’re sure it’s a 30mm tube OD a 31.8 collar is over a millimetre far from ideal.

Sounds to me like you’ve got a 31.8mm collar, and that’s why they won’t fit your 30mm seat tube. Old Kona by any chance?

Yes, 2009 Genesis IO ID.
I've fitted a dropper and want to get rid of the QR clamp

re:"did you measure the internal diameter of the collar?"
It's about 31.8mm without any torque on the bolt, So I suppose it is the a 31.8. I cant find 34mm anywhere. hmmm

I guess, but I was very polite about it at the time and entirely ready for them to tell me I was mistaken and recommend the correct part for me etc. But they said they'd check, then confirmed it was the wrong part and refunded me without me asking and I thanked them for their great customer service etc ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The Pic they have on their site didn't help.

@monkeyboyjc

I just saw your post, ha, they must have my clamp 🙂 but that's great info.
I found a few other posts, it sounds like nost Genisis steel frames of that time were shipping with 29.8mm clamps.
So I think i've got it now. I probably need a 29.8mm or a 30mm clamp but I ordered a 31.8mm clamp (twice form different sellers) which arrived with 34 stamped on them for no apparent reason. I've ordered a 30mm this time. Fingers crossed

I needed that size years ago for a DMR frame, I hated the clamp it came with, only thing I could get was a Spank one, but it was a nice red clamp and cheap.
