[Closed] Seat post length (Can I get away with 350mm?)

Hi folks,

The seat post that came on my Cindercone seems to be knackered - The clamp at the top rotates on the post and I can't find anywhere to tighten it...

I have been looking at replacement posts, and I'm a little unsure about length.

The current post is 400mm, and at riding height, I have it clamped about 5-6cm above the "Minimum insertion" line.

I've seen a few good deals on posts, but they are all 350mm posts. Will I get away with a 350mm post considering that 400mm - 50mm = 350mm, and where I clamp it will lie somewhere very close to the minimum insertion line.

I'm thinking (Although I may have got this slightly confused) that the shorter post will mean that there is less length required for the minimum insertion due to leverage, and that might work in my favour.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Andy

P.s. If anyone knows of a way to tighten the clamp to the post, this would save me ~£25 that I would rather spend on something other than a seat post...

Drill a hole right thru the post where head/clamp's pressed into the post, a nut n bolt thru hole will stop it rotating.

There are two things to bear in mined The minimum insertion line on the post is there to protect the post not the frame; having the minimum insertion line above (or perhaps close to, if you're heavy) the top of the seat tube is likely to end with a snapped post.

The second is the minimum insertion point for the frame (this isn't connected to the min. insertion point for the post). Failure to meet this requirement may lead to a cracked/snapped seattube. A post fitted with its minimum insertion line below, but close to, the top of the seat tube may not nesessarily meet the minimum instertion point for the frame (especially if it has an extended seat tube).

The minimum insertion point for a frame may vary but generally you want some post extending beyond the lowest point of the seat tube/top tube weld.

Thanks for the responses.

GW:

I've had a look at the seatpost and I'm not sure that would work... The bottom half of the clamp is a semi-circular piece of metal that rotates in the clamp and I don't think it would sit well if I started drilling it. Might get the drill out and give it a whirl though - not got anything to lose.

PJay:

I take it I need to email Kona to find the correct information about this. I've had a look at the frame and 100mm (Which is the minimum limit on all 350mm posts I've looked at) will go past the bottom of the seat tube/top tube weld.

Maybe I should just look out for a 400mm post and ignore the nice offers I've seen on 350mm ones...

I just bought a 400 post off crc for under 30 quid but by the sounds of it a 350 will do.
