Hi,
Are Scrub any good ? I had Hunts which I destroyed. I’m looking at options before going for Hopes with XM481 rims.
Cheers
Not heard of them, but I'd just go for the Hopes 😉
I was looking at the wheels on my Surly Krampus yesterday...Hope Pro 2 Evos + Surly rims.
The hubs are 9ish years old, according to Strava that bike has done 8000+ km. It's been ridden in all weathers and conditions, including over axle deep muddy bogs, and in that time I've changed one rumbly front bearing.
In fact I just remembered... they weren't even new to me! I bought them as lightly used second hand. 🤘
I have a set of scrub carbon rims on hope hubs and they have been brilliant. I had a set of XM481s on the hubs before and managed to fatally trash them and just replaced the rims. highly recommend!
Just had a look on their website but can't see any real details. Are they rebranding something from China?
Ive had a set of the Carbon Enduro’s with Industry Nine hubs for a couple of months now and they are awesome. So much lighter and a better ride than the Hope Fortus 30’s I had. Did all the heavy stuff at Bike Park Wales and they were great. Andy the owner gives a fantastic personal service and certainly knows his stuff. They certainly aren’t rebranded Chinese knock offs!
Are they rebranding something from China?
Yup, they even say so here:

Scrub are effectively a 1 man band and they're charging £800 for a carbon wheelset, either it's open mould from China or the guy's going to imminently be out of business and probably going to lose his house in the process as there's no way on earth he's building and selling enough wheels to pay off the tooling costs of a bespoke carbon mould.
Nothing wrong with that, it's a cheap way to get carbon wheels and they can be pretty good, but don't kid yourself that you're getting anything except a Gigantex/Farsports/Light Bicycle etc rim with less import faff and nicer stickers.
A helpful guide to setting up your new business 🙂
How to Set your own Fake wheel company
Tbh the import farf isn’t really a big deal, just have to factor in in a bit more dosh on top.
Hi guys, Andy here from Scrub Wheels
This thread seemed to have passed me by until now - I'm always happy to chat wheels!
The main thing people seem to want to know is where the carbon rims originate - they are indeed open mold from China.
As someone pointed out, having your own molds is a prohibitively expensive exercise for a small business. Hopefully one day. Though, for now at least, I am really happy with the supplier
I use. I've been buying from them for nearly 5 years, tried tons of different profiles to arrive here and developed a really good relationship with them.
I totally get that anyone out there can find themselves a manufacturer and order something similar - that's absolutely fine - it's how I started 🙂
For many though there is a certain reassurance in buying from a UK based company who will do the leg work for them. Not to mention UK stocked spares and support should it be required.
The carbon side of things is actually only a small part of the business so I would urge you guys to have a poke around on the website - scrubwheels.com
I've loads of alloy wheelsets (currently I have DT Swiss EX511's on a special offer) and various upgrade options available too.
I saw the "how to start a fake wheel company" a while ago and would definitely stress that all Scrub wheels are UK hand built.
My wheels don't arrive ready built from a factory somewhere then simply get shipped on for mega £££'s like the film.
I do my best to keep pricing as competitive as possible. Margins aren't huge but bike riding is expensive enough as it is so I try to be fair.
Components parts are sourced from a variety of suppliers and 100% hand built - by me. If I'm not happy with it, it doesn't go out!
Building a reputation for quality wheels and customer service is just about the most important thing for me!
Scrub Wheels is not a "fake wheel company." I'm just trying to offer riders something a little different while trying to make a living out of doing something I love!
Any questions please just drop me a line - like say, always happy to talk wheels!
All the best
Andy
how to start a fake wheel company”
I was about to post that but didn't think it was fair as Andy is building in house so it's not quite the same as 'brands' who just buy complete wheels from the Far East with their stickers on them.
Again nothing wrong with that, entirely valid business model, but when a 'brand's' marketing is full of how great they are are at 'engineering' and they do photoshoots at wind tunnels etc when the sum total of their R&D is leafing through the Taiwan Bicycle source book it does rustle my jimmies a bit.
I've bought alloy wheels from Scrub and they've been excellent so far (much better than wheels I have from Hunt), plus the service from Andy was excellent. When I'm next in the market for wheels, Scrub will be the first place I look. YMMV obs.

Thanks Salad_dodger - that's really great to hear! Properly made my day that 🙂

Found this thread while Googling around for reviews. My new bike came with E-thirteen rims which are already absolutely savaged.
Is anyone riding the carbon enduro wheelset? £895 with Pro 4 hubs. Are they worth a one off splurge after a few years of tight fistedness?
I'm carbon curious for some reason even though I know that XM481's would do the same job. They'll be used with Rimpact Pro inserts and I might even treat myself to some new tyres.
Website is a little limited, any idea where I can find hub bearing information?
Asking for a friend…
What is the difference between the alloy “enduro” and “trail” wheels? Both seem to have 30mm Id rims and max 120kg system weights. What does a set of 29er trail wheels weigh?
There's a contact form on the Scrub website and he seems pretty helpful from the brief interactions I've had with him. I'd just email him.
I do think the website should have a lot more technical info available.
