Okay daughter has just come in from riding, apparently she came off big time and looking at her forks i wouls agree, they are fox 36 talas and now have three sorry four chunks out of them down to silver metal, about two thirds up the fork from the seals..
What are our options
try and repair......if so how?
Can you replace a stanchion if so by whom and how much?
Buy new forks? ( NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO please no)
will post pics in awhils.
all help greatly appreciated.
new stanchions (CSU) is about £200
Your daughter might well have just the tools to fix it herself. I presume you've checked she's not too badly dented or scratched now that you've checked the bike over 🙂
thanks
1) wher to get new stanchions? can you buy one?
2) cheers she has many fine shade of nail varnish.....clear not sure.......she is fine bruised and rattled but fine....drinking tean and sheepish.
so wet and dry 1200 paper aND clear nail varinsh
only needs to be clear if you don't want to see it, can be any shade you like otherwise, maybe one that compliments the bruises. EDIT although then she'd need to change the shade every few days
😀
You cant replace individual stanchions, has to be the whole upper with crown and assembly. You can buy them from Mojo. I would go with the nail varnish fix first then monitor the seals for oil leaks. To make sure they are not getting trashed by the scratches.
You can buy a lot of seals for £200 quid! I fixed my domains with a nice shade of purple that my girlfriend had left lying around! worked a treat
That's not too bad, seen worse repaired to a satisfactory standard. Araldite probably works better than nail varnish, but either is fine
that should fix up no problems at all. It's always hard to tell from pics but if there are any deep bits which are going to take ages to fill with nail varnish then epoxy resin works well. It's sticky enough that you can 'sculpt' it without it running down the stanchion.
the higher up they are, the better, I reckon - scratches won't spend that much time next to the seals (and when they are next to the seals they'll be moving quickish anyway)
fill the holes and carry on - I bet they're fine
My Revs have been carrying worse scratches than that for over a year, never a problem- I just smoothed it down and ran a wee bit of laquer into it, they're not smooth but they're smooth enough. Nothing to be lost by trying anyway
That's a mere flesh wound. Get a VERY fine file to take off any lumps, then wet and dry. fill with nail varnish, then back at it with the wet and dry.
I 'borrowed' one of these off my mum, it has about 6 different grades of abrasives. The coarsest ones will be too coarse but there are a couple of very fine and buffing materials on it! Curves nicely to conform to the shape of the stanchions!

That'll buff out...
No, seriously; it will!
thanks will get all the required parts for the task.............................now cracks in carbon handlebars????
I ride with worse than that all the time without a problem. Just make sure there are no sharp edges and there's a good chance you wont even have any oil seepage problems (I've got a deep chunk out of a Boxxer stanchion around 2-3 inches up the leg, so constantly in/out of the sealing area but with no problems whatsoever)
Fair play to your daughter if she's riding stuff that warrants a fork like that.
That's assuming they aren't fixed to an Isla Rothan.
As the others said, should be fine with a bit of TLC. COuld be vertical as well which would be worse. For replacements consider TFTuned or MOJO. You could have the crown replaced as part of a service at some point to keep labour costs down.
lol no not stuck to an isla............but at 20 years old and a student she probably would do if some one suggested it.
right will see how i go on tomorrow night with the bodging
yup.... nail varnish or if deep then araldite. let it set overnight and then get to work with fine (1000+) wet'n'dry. use a thin oil instead of water.
my lyrik stanchions are scratched to buggery; a few long ones on the left where i fell off a wall and a nice deep one where the bike was badly loaded onto a trailer and driven back over the alps. the seals were fine but replaced one year later, but replaced them as i was changing the spring.
